RA Selection Process

New RA candidates will submit formal application and complete both an individual and group interview.

Timeline for Positions Starting in Fall 2020

  • Monday, February 3 - RA applications open in ResLife Online at 9 a.m.
  • Thursday, February 20 - RA applications close at noon.
  • Friday, March 6 - RA candidate notification sent via SJFC email no later than 4:30 p.m.
  • Monday, March 16 - RA position offers must be accepted or declined no later than noon.
  • Friday, April 17 - RA placement notification sent via SJFC email no later than 4:30 p.m.

Information Sessions

Although not required, RA candidates are encouraged to attend an information session to learn more about the RA position and meet with current Residential Life staff.

  • Thursday, February 6 - 12:30 p.m. (Location: Campus Center, Mainstage)
  • Monday, February 10 - 4:45 p.m. (Location: Campus Center, Mainstage)

Individual Interview

Individual interviews will take place during the day on February 19 - 21 and the morning of February 23. RA candidates will select a 20 minute interview appointment when completing the RA Application in ResLife Online.

Group Interview

Group interviews are 90 minutes in length. All group interviews will take place on Sunday February 23 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Information about the group interview process will be sent to RA candidates via SJFC email on Thursday, February 20 by 4:30 p.m.

RA Application

The RA application includes general, academic, and involvement related information. Applicants are also asked to provide contact information (name and email address).

References

References must be a person who can speak about a candidate's character and quality of work. Suitable references include but are not limited to a coach, professor, supervisor or club advisor. Candidates current RA or RD may not be a reference. Potential references are more responsive to these requests if a candidate asks for permission in advance.

Individual Interview

Each candidate must participate in an individual interview. The purpose of the individual interview is to give candidates an opportunity to talk about their leadership, work experience, relevant skills and strengths. Attire for this interview is casual.

Group Interview

The purpose of the group interview is to give the candidates an opportunity to work in small groups to complete structured interactive activities with other candidates. Teamwork and decision-making will be the focus of these structured activities. Attire for this interview is casual. Candidates will be participating in various activities and should be comfortable moving around.

Hiring and Placement

Candidates will be evaluated based on their application materials, participation in the RA selection process, and compatibility with the department's mission and goals. Decisions regarding hiring and placement are also based on the current needs of the residential community.
