Fire and Safety Information for Residence Halls

Your safety is our top priority. Keeping this in mind, the residence halls are secured by a card swipe system or locked entrance. You will have access to your residence hall only.

Residence Hall Safety Tips

  • Keep doors and windows locked, especially when sleeping or when you are not in the room.
  • Secure valuables out of sight and password protect your computer.
  • Know your neighbors.
  • Know the location of the nearest blue light phone.
  • Report suspicious people or events to Security.
  • Do not give your keys or student ID to anyone.
  • Report lost keys and/or IDs immediately to Residential Life or Security.
  • Do not prop doors open or leave doors open. Propped-open doors provide access for intruders.
  • Do not loan your credit cards or your pin numbers to anyone.

Fire Safety Information

Fire Hazards

In order to keep the residence halls and campus buildings safe for everyone, Fisher has identified specific fire hazards that are prohibited on-campus.

Candles/incense may not be burned in the residence halls for any reason, including religious purposes. Please contact your residence director for assistance in finding an appropriate location for burning candles or incense for religious purposes.

Fire Alarms

  • DO NOT IGNORE THE FIRE ALARM.
  • Feel the door to see if it is warm (if warm, remain in room and call for help [i.e. phone, shout]). Test the intensity of heat in the corridors by touching the inside of the door or doorknob.
  • Wake roommates and suitemates.
  • Close windows and doors as you leave. Lock your room door if there is no presence of fire or smoke in your room or in the hallway.
  • DO NOT USE ELEVATORS. Walk to the nearest stairwell. If the stairwell is blocked by smoke or fire, use the other exit(s) located in your hallway. If you have special needs, wait for emergency personnel in your designated evacuation area. If you have special needs that have not been disclosed to Fisher, please contact the fire marshal at (585) 385-8025 to discuss your evacuation plan.
  • Leave the building and move to your building's designated meeting area (see table below) and wait for further directions.
  • Keep out of the way of the fire department equipment.
  • Return to building only when instructed by a member of Safety and Security.

Fire/Safety Inspections

Fisher makes periodic fire/safety inspections of the rooms during the year and reserves the right to remove all items considered to be fire/safety hazards. Any questions regarding the acceptability of items you wish to bring into the residence hall or about electrical hookups must be directed to the campus fire marshal.

About Residence Hall Fire Alarms

Smoke detectors are sensitive to a number of items in addition to smoke from fire, including high levels of dust, powders, steam, and mists. A room or hall smoke detector may activate upon exposure to these products. This type of activation is classified as a nuisance alarm. The Fire Department must respond in emergency mode to any fire alarm activation on campus, and Fisher can be fined by the town for excessive nuisance alarms.

Emergency Information for Parents

Emergency Phone Information

Your student should list his/her emergency contacts in the ResLife Online system, which is the place that they apply for housing.

Medical Emergencies

If your student is involved in a medical emergency during the day, you will more than likely be informed by your student from the Health and Wellness Center. You will not be contacted by the Health and Wellness Center if your student makes a routine visit. The Health and Wellness Center is unable to give out any information without permission from your student.

In the event your student is involved in an after-hours medical situation involving transportation to the hospital, every effort will be made to contact you at the phone number that your student has on file.

Insurance Cards and Medical Emergencies

All students must have health insurance and it is advisable that your student brings his/her insurance card to college in case of an emergency. Students should also know to what medications they are allergic.

Weather Emergencies

Should Fisher need to close for any weather emergency, it will be broadcast in the Rochester area on 1180 WHAM as well as local TV outlets. Information will also be posted on the main Fisher website www.sjf.edu, as well as the Fisher Facebook page and Twitter account. Please do not contact the Fisher switchboard or the Office of Safety and Security; both need to remain open for emergency calls.
