Job Prospects for Teachers

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for new teachers is favorable. Between 2012 and 2022, the following increases in job prospects are projected:

  • Preschool teacher - 17%
  • Elementary school teacher - 12%
  • High school teacher - 6%
  • Special Education Teacher - 6%

Average Starting Salary

According to a National Education Association (NEA) survey of teacher salaries, the average starting salary for teachers in New York state in 2013 was $43,839, which is higher than the national average starting salary for many popular fields according to a 2013-14 PayScale College Salary Report.
