Service Scholars Program
The Service Scholars Program allows students to continue their involvement in community service throughout college.
The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who exhibit a commitment to service through activities in their schools, places of worship, non-profit agencies, and in their communities. Recipients receive yearly awards of one-half the total cost of tuition and room and board.
The Service Scholars Program is an opportunity to make a difference both in the Rochester community and with the Fisher Family, while making memories that will last a lifetime.
Note: The application deadline for the Service Scholars Program has passed.
Recipients of this scholarship will be notified no later than March 31.
- Have performed a minimum of 50 hours of community service per year to their community, school, or church
- Be high school seniors planning to attend Fisher in the following fall semester
Regular admission standards typically include a high school GPA of B/B+ and a total SAT score (math and evidence-based reading and writing) of 1080 or higher.
Students applying for HEOP are not eligible for the Service Scholarship.
In order to retain their awards while engaged in full-time study as matriculated students, Service Scholars are required to:
- Participate in a two-course learning community entitled "Leadership Through Self-Development" during the fall semester of their first year at St. John Fisher College.
- Attend a service-learning seminar course during spring semester freshmen year and during spring semester senior year (a retreat).
- Complete one service-learning course during their program tenure.
- Make a commitment to community service hours as follows: 130 hours the first year and 200 hours each remaining year.
Note: Service hours are coordinated through the Community Service Office. Students can also arrange to have a portion of the community service hours they perform during semester breaks count toward their total semester requirement.
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress toward the completion of their degree requirements.
Upon completion, students are awarded a Certificate in Service Leadership.
Service Scholars Program of Study
Leadership Through Self-Development
The most basic responsibility of leadership is self-development. In this class, different ways of obtaining self-knowledge (such as structured reflection, self-directed writing, and role playing) are used to promote discovery of values, strength of commitments, individual learning style, and feelings about change. Readings introduce learners to scholars whose ideas have shaped modern approaches to leadership, including those who write about stewardship, servant leadership, ways women lead, and visionary leadership. Participants practice the behavioral skills upon which leaders rely to build credibility, inspire trust, and exert non-coercive influence.
Freshman Service-Learning Seminar
The seminar's purpose is to provide freshmen scholars with a forum to reflect thoughtfully on the mission of the program and on their experiences as service scholars. The seminar meets once a month, and a class community service project is required.
Senior Service-Learning Seminar
This seminar expands upon the techniques used in the freshman/sophomore Service-Learning Seminar to enhance service-learning. Particular emphasis is given to examining functional attitudes and required competencies for individuals who want to pursue careers in community service. Students are expected to provide service over a prescribed number of hours in conjunction with seminar attendance.
Service Project Independent Study
Seniors participated in a full day retreat reflecting on their four-year service experiences and leadership development in the program.
