I don’t know what to major in!

Explore classes in all areas to see what subjects capture your interest. Take a career assessment by making an appointment with the Center for Career and Academic Planning and most importantly, talk with those who know you to confirm your interests and natural skills. I know my major, now what?

Your most valuable resource is faculty in your major. Also contact alumni in your field for advice, internships, and career expertise. You also can visit What Can I Do With a Major In… for a listing of possible career pathways linked to various majors.

What is the Career Planning and Exploration class?

For juniors and seniors only, ITDY 109 - Career Planning and Exploration is a 1/2 semester, one credit class offering focused and personalized workshops on the career exploration process. You will also have professional resumes and other career related correspondence ready for targeted choices.

What is my career timeline? How do I make one?

Meet with a career counselor to discuss your specific situation and how to create a realistic timeline for your career area. You can also refer to our four-year career development plan.

How will an internship help?

Internships are a great way to "test drive" certain career pathways. In conjunction with many academic departments, the Center for Career and Academic Planning supports the sourcing of student internships to provide practical work experience, build credentials, and provide affirmation of career path choices. The Center for Career and Academic Planning provides a centralized location of internship postings in Handshake. Internships done for credit must be approved by your academic advisor.

How do I make a resume and/or cover letter?

Utilize sample resumes and cover letters to create a first draft or to update an existing draft. We have templates you can download to help you get started. Do NOT use a Microsoft Word template!

Search through the posted positions in Handshake and other online resources.

How do I find a job or internship?

Identify a company or field in which you would like to work. Find people to contact about internships in that company/field through faculty or the Center for Career and Academic Planning.

What makes someone stand out as a great candidate?

Confident, hard-working students who have internship, volunteer, or work experience in their field are attractive candidates. Those who also display professionalism in behavior and dress as well as strong communication skills stand out. The Center for Career and Academic Planning offers workshops in all these areas. Take advantage of all of them!

Help! I have an interview… What do I do?
  • Read our Perfecting the Interview [pdf] guide.
  • Research the company thoroughly and prepare a couple of questions.
  • If at all possible, participate in a mock interview through the Center for Career and Academic Planning.
I have two great job offers, how do I choose?

Meet with a career counselor to discuss various factors to your decision, including your values, personal monetary needs, etc. NEVER accept a position and then accept another, thus reneging on the first.

I didn’t get the job I wanted. What do I do now?

Career counselors are happy to meet with you to explore alternate career choices and show you additional resources. Contact the Center for Career and Academic Planning at (585) 385-8050 to make an appointment.

What is an informational interview?

Learn about the benefits of networking, how to network effectively, and more.

Why network?

Networking provides you with the opportunity to meet people in fields of interest, and gather valuable information about openings and companies. It also enables you to stay in the forefront of someone’s mind when they, or some other contact, may be in a position to hire.

Who do I network with?

Networking happens everyday: at garage sales, at the gym, even in the classroom! Start with the people you are connected with: faculty, parents of your friends, alumni, former or current employers etc. Let them know about your interests and hopes. Ask for informational interviews and advice.

When should I network?

It’s never too early to begin networking. In fact, you probably already have a great network to start from. Fill out the 3 Minutes 30 Contacts [pdf] form and see how many people you already have in your network.

How do I make the most of my network?

When you make a contact with someone, you never know what contacts they may have to assist you, so you want all communications to be professional. Review our Informational Interviews and Networking [pdf] pamphlet for details on how to make the most of your network.
