Family and Student Sponsor Information from the Center for Career and Academic Planning

As a family member or loved one of a St. John Fisher College student, you may have questions about how Fisher supports the success of your student.

What guidance is offered in choosing a major? How will your child choose a career? What are the best job options for him or her to pursue? Who will provide support along the way? While Fisher students are ultimately responsible for their own success—in academics and in their career—the Center for Career and Academic Planning (CCAP) is prepared to help them from day one.

We have a common goal to see your student succeed academically and become career ready. Ideally each student will interact with CCAP advisors to utilize the services and understand the value and benefits offered. We have set up CCAP in order to address the national trend of only 5% of entering freshmen thinking they need career assistance. CCAP offers both breadth and depth in our expertise to be an essential success partner with your student. From assessments that clarify career interests to navigating academic requirements to accessing tutoring and support services to locating internships and mentoring opportunities to developing a resume and job search plan to preparing for interviews we educate students to prepare for life after college and to make informed choices about their future.

We also consider ourselves partners with you in guiding your student’s academic and career success. You will find some suggestions below that can help guide you as a parent in your child's college (and beyond) success process. We know that you are your student's greatest supporter and we hope this information will help advise and coach your student in his or her Fisher signature experience.

Here are some suggestions:

Encourage exploration. Choosing a major, and possible career pathways related to that major, is a complex and nuanced process. CCAP advisors are well prepared with tools, expertise, and resources to guide that process.

Model networking and career professionalism. Offer to be a career mentor to other Fisher students. Host a site visit. If you’re in a position to recruit and hire Fisher talent, post opportunities with us.

Urge early involvement with CCAP, and specifically Career Services. Waiting until senior year means they’ve missed out on (literally) years of career help.

Encourage help-seeking. College is not high school: the stakes are higher and so are the standards. If you think something isn’t working, call us and we’ll connect your student to support.

Nudge them toward our events and opportunities. From on-campus job postings to academic expos to employer site visits to our career fairs, encourage them to participate. This builds their knowledge, confidence, and networking skills.

Challenge your student to become occupationally literate. Ask about employment sector trends, emerging industries, and global influences on their target occupation. Inquire how what they learn in their classes relates to their career aspirations.

Urge involvement—to an extent. Employers want soft skills (team work, leadership, communication, appreciation for difference) and much of these come from out-of-class activities. Support joining one or two clubs, working a part time job, or doing volunteering. Taking a study abroad experience can be life-changing and builds amazing new skills.

Support pre-career experiences like internships, job shadowing, site visits, or mentoring programs. CCAP is constantly developing these opportunities with our partner employers and with many alumni.
