Peer Tutoring

Peer tutoring is provided at no cost for a variety of introductory undergraduate courses (many 100-level and some 200-level courses) during the fall and spring semesters.

Peer tutors are students who have completed the courses they tutor with a grade of B+ or higher and have received the recommendation of a faculty member or department chair.

The goal of tutoring is to help you find ways to learn course material more successfully. A tutor can assist you by discussing notes, clarifying textbook material and reviewing practice problems. Tutors are not allowed to complete your work assignments. Tutoring provides additional support that should complement and reinforce what you are learning in the classroom. Your effort is required for tutoring to be successful. It is your responsibility to attend class, participate in classroom discussions, and prepare assignments.

Tutoring begins two weeks after the start of classes and concludes two weeks prior to the last day of classes in a semester. The final week to request a tutor will be in early November for fall and early April for spring. Students are eligible for three hours of tutoring per week in no more than two courses at one time. All hours must be approved in advance.

If You Need a Tutor:

  • Peer tutoring begins September 21 for the fall 2017 semester.
  • Complete a Peer Tutor Request online and then check your email.
  • You will be given an appointment to meet with the tutoring coordinator in the Center for Academic Advising and Support Services within one week of submitting the registration form.
  • You need to be prepared for your tutoring sessions, having completed reading assignments and homework exercises as assigned by your course instructor or recommended by the tutor. Plan specific questions or topics to be covered and have a general idea of what you hope to accomplish in the session.
  • Keep all tutoring appointments. Failure to do so may result in suspension of tutoring services.
  • Tutoring may not be provided for a class in which you lack the prerequisite coursework, as tutoring cannot replace the material covered in these courses.
  • The Writing Center provides assistance with writing papers.
  • The Math Center provides tutors in math and computer science. Math Center tutors can also assist with math skills and concepts that are related to non-math courses such as CHEM 103, ECON 221, CSCI, and introductory physics courses.
  • Accounting courses and some science courses are tutored in a group setting. Times and locations are posted in the Center for Academic Advising and Support Services.

If you are having difficulty, it is always best to speak with your professor, who often will help with course material or offer strategies that will allow you to be successful in their class.
