The council is a professional organization whose members are dedicated to promoting and enhancing literacy education through professional development and community service.

Earlier this spring, Maples served as a guest contributor for Dr. Steven Bickmore's national young adult literature blog, Dr. Bickmore's YA Wednesday. Her blog post was about using young adult literature to teach teachers how to discuss difficult topics in the classroom. Her focus was specifically about the young adult novel, All American Boys, and one of her student's experiences teaching it.
