Sports Teams Find Success as Fall Seasons Come to a Close

As the fall athletic seasons comes to a close, here’s a round-up of their latest successes in regular season competition.

The men’s soccer team defeated Alfred University 3-1 to give the Cardinals the No. 4 seed in the Empire 8 Championship tournament. Fisher finishes the regular season with an 8-5-4 overall record, and a 3-3-1 Empire 8 standing. Matt Soos, Bryan Rollins, Zachary Munski, Amar Mann, Muhamed Miljkovic, Louis Guiliano, Jake Gentile, Justin Ferron, John Maroney, and Szymon Labecki are all senior members of the team.

Fisher will travel to Hoboken Saturday for the Empire 8 Conference Championship tournament, playing against the hosting Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks.

The field hockey team capped off its regular season schedule with an Empire 8 Conference victory over Hartwick College by a score of 3-0. With the Senior Day win, the Cardinals secured the No. 2 seed in the Empire 8 Conference Championship. Fisher improves to 15-3 overall and 6-1 in the Empire 8. Field hockey seniors include Samantha Hyde, Emily Markarian, and Hannah Cooper.

The Cardinals return to action at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, as they travel to Washington and Jefferson College to play in the Empire 8 Championship.  

The women’s soccer team closed out its regular season schedule with a 4-2 victory over Elmira College. At the completion of the 2017 campaign, the Cardinals finish with a record of 5-12-1. Team seniors include Jackie Romano, Alison Menges, and Nora Broderick.

On the day that it honored its senior class, the football team racked up a season-high 557 yards of offense as the Cardinals knocked off visiting SUNY Cortland on Saturday, Oct. 28.  With the win, Fisher improved to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the Empire 8 standings. Senior running back James Chambers led the charge on offense as the Lockport native produced three touchdowns and 300 yards of offense on his own with a career-high 199 rushing yards to go along with 91 receiving yards on eight receptions. Along with Chambers, John Horne, Mike Hastings, Justin Rivera, David Carroll, Cole Ansley-Purpura, Seth Billington, Jason Micelli, J.J. Mulvey, Colin McGraw, Jonathan Piersma, Mike Collichio, Wyatt Stehle, Khari Demos, James Fiacchi, Mike Mintell, Kody Ashley were all honored prior to kickoff.

Fisher will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, as it travels to Morrisville to take on the Mustangs in an Empire 8 pairing. 

The men’s cross country team placed second at the Empire 8 Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28. As a team, the Cardinals finished with 70 points and four top-25 finishers in the 8k event. The second overall finish tied the program’s best overall finish at the Empire 8 Championships. Senior James Felice was the top finisher for the Cardinals in fourth place, crossing the finish line with a time of 28:15.8. Felice is joined by fellow seniors Alex Schmitt, Peter Girardi, Nick Schug, and Luke Dunkelberg.

The women’s cross country team also performed well at the Empire 8 Championship, earning a third place finish. As a team, the Cardinals finished with 88 points and four top-20 finishers in the 6k event. The third place finish is the best overall finish in the women’s cross country program history. 

Both men’s and women’s cross country teams are back in action at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, as they travel to Houghton, New York, to compete in the NCAA Regional Championship for their last event of the 2017 season.

The men’s and women’s rowing teams were in action over the weekend as the Cardinals took part in the annual Head of the Fish. On the men’s side, Fisher competed in the varsity four and finished the event with a time of 14:10.98; the women competed in three events overall including the varsity four and the novice eight.

Men’s golf  completed its fall season on Sunday, Oct. 8, and finished in 17th place on Sunday as the Cardinals competed in the 36-hole Royal Lakes Oglethorpe Invitational, which was played at the par-72 Royal Lakes Golf Club.  Fisher will enter the spring season with a comfortable lead in the conference championship after finishing with a 28-stroke lead at the conclusion of the Empire 8 Fall Championship.

Additionally, the women’s golf team wrapped up its fall season with a third place finish in the Empire 8 Championship. 

The women’s tennis team concluded the 2017 fall season with a 9-3 overall record, which marked the most wins for the program since winning 11 matches in 2006.  The Cardinals earned the third overall seed in the Empire 8 Championship after playing to a 6-2 mark in the Empire 8 standings.  Seniors Amanda Pendergast and Sarah Sorrentino played a pivotal role in this year’s success.

The women’s volleyball team had its best season in nearly two decades as the Cardinals finished the regular season with a 22-8 overall record and a spot in the Empire 8 Championship for the second consecutive season.  Seniors Anna Marcy, Madison Karwas, Katie Mazierski and Amanda Miller each contributed in a big way down the stretch.

Fisher returns to the court at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4 when it takes on Nazareth College in the conference championship.
