The Wegmans School of Pharmacy at St. John Fisher College will launch its first undergraduate program this fall with the development of the new Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Studies.

The program will serve students in the School who wish to earn a bachelor’s while simultaneously pursuing the doctor of pharmacy degree. The program was approved by the New York State Education Department in late July.

“Many students enter the Pharm.D. program before earning a bachelor’s degree, and we’re proud to be able to further introduce them to the field of pharmacy by offering this credential,” said Dr. Christine Birnie, dean of the School. “Through the program, students will also have the opportunity to engage in the College’s Core Curriculum, interacting with faculty and coursework they might not otherwise be able to experience.”

The program begins with a foundation of coursework in mathematics and the basic sciences—chemistry, biology, and physics. Students will then progress to advanced coursework in the pharmaceutical sciences and obtain an introduction to the field of pharmacy as a profession.  Coursework includes aspects of drug design and synthesis, mechanisms of drug action, pharmacology, dosage formulation, drug information, epidemiology, and introduction to pharmacy practice. They will also take courses in economics, statistics, and communications.

Graduates of the program will be prepared to pursue careers as pharmaceutical scientists, in pharmaceutical sales and marketing, or in other health-related fields.  They will also be well-positioned for entry into graduate programs, including masters or doctoral degrees in the pharmaceutical sciences or pharmacy, as well as advanced degrees in business administration.

Fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, the School of Pharmacy offers a Doctor of Pharmacy program, and in partnership with Fisher’s School of Business also delivers a Pharm.D./MBA joint degree program. For more information about the School of Pharmacy, visit
