Fisher’s Fall Athletes are Back in Action

With 10 men’s and women’s sports teams participating in fall competition, it’s time to take out your calendars and save the dates for what could be some of Fisher’s most impressive matches.

Women’s Tennis

Fisher’s women’s tennis team returns from a well improved fall 2016 season where they achieved the best record the team has had in five years. The 2017 season will consist of 11 matches; seven will be hosted at Fisher’s hometown court, the Mendon Racquet and Pool Club. The team is currently 2-0, picking up its first Empire 8 victory of the season over the weekend. They will travel to Elmira College on Saturday, Sept. 9, for their second Empire 8 matchup.

Men and Women’s Cross Country

Last season, the men’s team was proud to place second in the Empire 8 Conference Championship, while the women’s team finished fifth. Both teams opened their 2017 seasons at the Brockport Early Season Short Course, earning third overall with 87 total points. They will be back in action at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Oneonta Airfield Invite in Oneonta, N.Y.

Women’s Field Hockey

As the 2016 Empire 8 Champions, Fisher’s field hockey team left an impressive mark on the campus last season with a dominating 19-3 record. The team will face a challenging season consisting of 18 games, 10 of which will be hosted at Fisher’s Growney Stadium. Over the weekend, the team suffered a tough overtime loss, 2-1, at nationally-ranked Skidmore College, then claimed their first win during a home opener at on Tuesday, Sept. 5, against The College at Brockport. The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 9, when they travel to Baltimore, Maryland to square off with Johns Hopkins University in a non-conference meeting.

Women’s Volleyball

Returning from a season of 12 wins, the women of Fisher’s volleyball team spent the off-season working hard on their skills. Over the weekend, it paid off as they netted a 3-1 record during the North Country Invitational. The team then came out strong for their first home match of the season, sweeping D'Youville College in straight sets 25-20, 25-17, 25-23. With the win Fisher improves to 4-1. The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday for two matches, as they travel to Erie, PA for the Northwest Pennsylvania Challenge.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s team also has an eventful season ahead with 17 games, eight of which will be hosted at Fisher’s Growney Stadium. Fisher, who dropped two games over the weekend, returns to the pitch at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, at The College at Brockport and will celebrate its home opener at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, against SUNY Geneseo.

Men’s Soccer

This season, the men’s soccer team will return from winning the Empire 8 Championship where they defeated Houghton College 3-2 the preceding season. Their season consists of 17 games. In its first three games of play, the team earned a 1-0-2 record, and looks to bring the action to Fisher during their home opener at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13, against The College at Brockport.

Men’s Football

After an impeccable 2016 season with a record of 8-3 and a national ranking, Fisher’s football team is preparing to dominate the field once again. While the Cardinals fell in their season-opener at Washington and Jefferson, they look forward to earning their 13th Courage Bowl victory during the home opener at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, against The College at Brockport.

Men’s Golf

The men’s golf team closed the 2016 season placing 23rd out of 42 teams at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship. Fisher, which will take part in nine tournaments overall this fall, will begin its season with the St. John Fisher Collegiate Invite on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Women’s Golf

The women’s golf team began their season with a third place finish over the weekend as the Cardinals shot a team score of 800 at the par-73, 5,582-yard Yahundasis Golf Club. The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the William Smith Invite in Geneva.

Men and Women’s Rowing

Heading into its seventh season, the rowing program continues to make strides as the men’s and women’s teams regularly compete in some of the top regattas in the nation. Last season, the Cardinals had their strongest showing yet at the Liberty League Championships and with a solid recruiting class, expectations are high in 2017-18.
