Fisher Students Host PRSA National President

November 30, 2017

On Thursday, Nov. 9, the St. John Fisher College Tom Proietti Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America and student-run communications firm The PRIMA Group hosted Jane Dvorak, the 2017 National Chair of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).

The students led a question and answer session with Dvorak about public relations, the communications industry, and career advice for members of the Department of Media and Communication and the College.

For some students, Dvorak’s visit was not the first encounter with the organization’s president. In October, nine students attended the PRSSA National Conference in Boston, Massachusetts. Just down the street, the PRSA International Conference was taking place and students had the opportunity to attend the conference welcome address, awards, and keynote. Dvorak’s memorable presence and sense of humor had students, and faculty, excited to welcome her to the College.

“From professional development opportunities with local PR professionals and agencies, to our annual trip to the PRSSA National Conference, Fisher students consistently benefit from their involvement in the Public Relations Student Society of America,” said Arien Rozelle, visiting assistant professor and advisor to PRSSA and PRIMA. “A visit from Jane Dvorak, the PRSA National Chair, shows the importance that PRSA places on the development of students to professional relationships, and we enjoyed her visit.”

Students were eager to learn from Dvorak’s experience.

“We loved having Jane visit our agency meeting for a Q & A. She spoke of her past and current experiences within the public relations industry through the lens of being authentic, patient, owning your mistakes, not being afraid to fail, and having a sense of humor,” said Allie Rudy, PRSSA chapter president. “Jane’s laugh is infectious and her passion for PR is inspiring. We are grateful for the time she spent with us.”

As an accredited member of public relations (APR), member of the PRSA College of Fellows, and recipient of 2011 and 2016 Silver Anvil awards, Dvorak is an accomplished practitioner with more than 30 years of experience in developing effective client campaigns and programs.

Dvorak’s leadership and passion in the industry extend to her position as president of PRSA. Her initiative to connect with PRSA Boards and student chapters around the country has qualified Dvorak as the #chaironthego. During her visit to the Greater Rochester area, Dvorak was also the keynote speaker at PRSA Rochester’s annual Chapter Business Meeting.
