Fisher Joins World Mental Health Awareness Day

October 11, 2017

A host of campus offices and groups collaborated to organize a day-long series of events in celebration of World Mental Health Awareness Day.

The Health and Wellness Center hosted an open house on World Mental Health Awareness Day.

According to the World Health Organization, the day—which is observed each year on October 10—is designed to raise awareness and support of mental health issues.

At Fisher, events and activities included a breakfast presentation for faculty and staff on how to help students of concern, a lecture by Dr. Ryan Thibodeau, associate professor of psychology, about mental illness stigma, and “Good Mood, Good Food” options in the Ward-Haffey Dining Hall, among other events.

Additionally, members of the Student Nursing Association promoted information and techniques for stress reduction with students in the dining hall.

During the day, the Health and Wellness Center also hosted an open house for its new Relaxation Station. A year-long project in the making, the Relaxation Station features cushy chairs, mats for stretching or quiet yoga, and stress reduction tools including stress balls, a biofeedback station, reading materials related to health topics, among others.

The Relaxation Station is now open in the Health and Wellness Center.

“It’s a quiet place for students to go if they need stress management support or a break in general,” said Rebecca Kieffer, director of the Health and Wellness Center.

Organized by the Division of Student Affairs, participating groups included the Office of Residential Life, the Office of Campus Life, Health and Wellness Center, 2017 Peer Mentors Class, Student Nursing Association, Healthy U Committee, the Employee Assistance Program, Department of Psychology, and Lackmann Dining Services.

To learn more about the Health and Wellness Center and the Relaxation Station, stop by the offices in Room 107 in the Wegmans School of the Nursing. Center staff will be available during the November 1 Wellness Wednesday, held from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Campus Center Atrium. Staff will be promoting and offering information on sexual health.

This semester, the Center is also continuing to sponsor a month-long flu vaccination clinic. Members of the Fisher community, as well as their friends and family members, can receive a flu vaccination from Fairport Road Wegmans Pharmacy staff from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Oct. 17 or 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30. Both clinics are held in Room 129 of the Wegmans School of Pharmacy.
