Courage Bowl XII Slated for September 24

September 15, 2016

The St. John Fisher College football team will take on The College at Brockport this month during the twelfth annual Courage Bowl. One of the College’s favorite traditions, the game is set for a 4 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium on Brockport’s campus.

More than just a game, proceeds from the Courage Bowl benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times, a camp for children, adults, and families whose lives have been touched by cancer and other life-threatening challenges. Since its inception in 2004, the game has raised more than $100,000 for Camp Good Days, and has become one of the organization’s largest fundraisers.

Beyond the funds raised, the game also serves as an opportunity for children who attend Camp Good Days to participate as members of the football team and cheerleading squad. Camp Good Days selected six boys, all of whom are campers dealing with cancer, to serve as honorary coaches with each team.

They will attend a practice with their team the week of the game and meet them for pre-game preparations. Additionally, they will be in the locker room on game day and lead the team onto the field. Honorary coaches also get the chance to be at midfield for the coin toss, and will be seen coaching from the sidelines during the game.

The Camp also selected four girls to serve as honorary cheerleaders with each squad.  They will attend practice with the squad, meet them for pre-game festivities, and cheer with them during the game.

Both honorary coaches and cheerleaders will be announced at the Courage Bowl Community Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 22, hosted by Brockport.

At the conclusion of the Courage Bowl, the Teddi Trophy, named in memory of Teddi Mervis, Camp founder Gary Mervis’ daughter and the inspiration behind Camp Good Days, will be presented to the winning team. Following tradition, the trophy will be inscribed with the date of the game, final score, names of the six honorary coaches, and the names of one player from each team who displays exceptional leadership and sportsmanship.

Tickets can be bought online through the College at Brockport’s website. Tickets are also available at the gate on game day.
