Donovan's research focuses broadly on public opinion and political behavior, and employs a variety of methodologies including experiments, surveys, and quantitative analyses of observational data. A number of her papers explore how fictional media impact public opinion on crime, as well as how extra-legal factors influence perceptions of police-citizen encounters.
