This minor focuses strongly on the business side of communication, specifically as it pertains to sales and promotion. In the business world, strategic communication is used in public relations, advertising, and media relations.

Common majors matched with this minor include English, psychology, marketing, and management. Students interested in a career in public relations or advertising who prefer to select a major outside of the Media and Communication Department also often pursue this minor.

Program Overview

The curriculum within the strategic communication minor covers how you can convince or persuade various audiences to take action, whether it is buying a product, supporting a cause, or donating time and money.

Introductory courses in public relations and advertising, as well as a class outlining the economics of media operations, are required. A choice of three electives allows you to pinpoint your area of interest within the field.  Electives include courses in:
