Biology Research Opportunities

Participating in undergraduate research is a big part of Fisher's Biology Department. Any biology major can participate!

Research Projects

Maura Connorton '20 earned a Summer Research Fellowship grant to support her research with Dr. Ed Freeman. Together they study the role of various bisphenols in metabolic changes in the developing fly as well as the impact the bisphenols have on zebrafish larvae swimming behaviors.

Propose a project of your own or work with a faculty member who already has one underway. The diversity of our faculty's research interests allow you to choose projects in areas such as:

  • Virology and microbiology
  • Molecular cell biology, genetics, and developmental biology
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Neurobiology and animal behavior
  • Ecology and environmental science
  • Nanobiology and biomedical engineering

See the bulletin board for faculty research profiles located outside Skalny 225, or chat with faculty at any time!

In many cases, you will have the chance to present your research at regional and national conferences, as well as at Fisher's own Student Research and Creative Work Symposium.

Conferences, Grants, and Awards

Alex Freedenberg '18 was chosen from 400 applicants to be one of 36 representatives at the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Hill Day event advocating for science research.

As a biology major, you will join a group of students with an excellent record of earning grants to support their undergraduate research. Fisher students have received research funding through the Rochester Academy of Sciences, TriBeta National Biological Honor Society, and various other discipline-specific professional organizations.

You will have the opportunity to engage in research with the potential to publish with Fisher faculty and to be selected for prestigious awards and other opportunities, including the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Students wishing to apply for the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship should consult with their research mentor for nomination and/or meet with Dr. Kristin Picardo, Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship campus representative.
