St. John Fisher College Presents Friday Faculty Lecture Series

PITTSFORD, N.Y., November 30, 2005—For the second consecutive year, St. John Fisher College is presenting its Friday Faculty Lecture Series to College alumni and residents of the Rochester community. The free lectures are designed for individuals who are interested in hearing perspectives on a variety of current topics from members of the St. John Fisher College faculty, encouraging a commitment to lifelong learning.

The lectures take place on the first Friday of each month. In the spring semester, they will take place from February through April.

December’s lecture will take place on Friday, December 2, 2005, in Basil Hall, Room 135, on the St. John Fisher College campus. The lecture begins at 10:00 a.m. Preceding the lecture, there is an optional Mass at 9:00 a.m., with a continental breakfast, in the midlevel of the Golisano Gateway.

This month’s lecture will be delivered by Dr. Timothy Madigan, Professor in St. John Fisher College’s Philosophy and Classical Studies Department. The topic of his lecture is “A Quest for Perfection: The Continuing Relevance of Sir Thomas More’s Utopia.”

In his lecture, Professor Madigan will describe the world of the Utopians, a perfect society existing somewhere in the newly discovered Americas. He will pose the question of why a devout Catholic like More would seem to extol the virtues of a place where divorce, assassination, and euthanasia were practiced.

Thomas More, Chancellor of England, Humanist, and friend to John Fisher (both of whom were executed by King Henry VIII for refusing to accept the Act of Supremacy, which made the sovereign the supreme head on earth of the Church of England), wrote Utopia in 1516. Almost 500 years later, it remains his best-known and most discussed work.

Earlier this year, Professor Madigan took part in a two-month long discussion of More’s Utopia at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church’s “Christian Pathways” group, under the auspices of Fisher professor and colleague, Dr. David White.

For more information about the lecture series or to register, please contact Shannon Hansford at 585-385-7322 or shansford@sjfc.edu.

Donald E. Bain, Ph.D., Named Fisher’s 6th President

Donald E. BainPITTSFORD, N.Y., November 18, 2005—St. John Fisher College’s Board of Trustees has named Donald E. Bain, Ph.D., as the College’s 6th President. Bain has been the Interim President since the death of Katherine Keough in September 2004.

Bain, 62, has been a member of the St. John Fisher College community for 30 years, and, prior to being named Interim President last fall, has held the positions of assistant, associate, and full professor; Chair of the Department of History; Dean of Faculty; Provost and Dean of the College; and Acting President.

“When we started looking for a replacement for Katherine Keough, we wanted to find an individual who shared her dynamic vision and who was prepared to take the College to the next level of excellence,” said Joseph R. Rulison ’78, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “In the last year, Dr. Bain has clearly demonstrated the leadership skills to do just that.”

During his tenure as Interim President, Bain was responsible for securing the largest gift in the history of the College, $5 million from Robert B. Wegman, to fund the Wegmans School of Pharmacy. In addition, he guided the College in the creation of the School of Arts and Sciences and in the implementation of a new core curriculum program.  He expanded the physical plant of the College with the construction of the Campus Center, the College’s new student union; Keough Hall, the newest residence facility; and the 200-seat expansion to the dining hall.

Bain received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo. During his undergraduate studies, he was a research assistant at Columbia University; following his doctoral work, he accepted a fellowship at Yale University. He subsequently studied at Harvard University, receiving a graduate certificate in educational management.

Before completing his education, Bain served four years in the United State Navy as a member of a combat aircrew. A Vietnam era veteran, he is a member of the Williamson, NY, American Legion Post 394. Committed to public service, he was just reelected to a fourth term as Town Justice in Williamson.

Bain’s research interests—history and the law—have taken him into government service during leaves of absence from the College. A specialist in 20th century American national security, he has been a Visiting Scholar at the Defense Intelligence Agency. He has also held a senior appointment in the Military Strategy Division of the Department of Defense, National Defense University in Washington. His publications include numerous articles, essays, and book chapters dealing with American strategic policies and planning.

“When the Search Committee first convened, we agreed that we were looking for a candidate who embraced the Basilian motto, ‘Teach me goodness, discipline, and knowledge,’” said Thomas F. Bonadio ’71 and José J. Coronas, Co-Chairs of the Presidential Search Committee. “Dr. Bain’s dedication to the liberal arts and his demonstrated commitment to service indicated that he was the right person to carry on the Basilian heritage.”

Bain and his wife, Meg, have two children, Donald and Genevieve, and four grandchildren.

Statement from Congressman James T. Walsh 25th Congressional District, New York State

“I have worked with Don to advance a number of initiatives important to the College and the Greater Rochester community. I can attest to Dr. Bain’s love for the institution and to his strong working relationship with his colleagues. Over the last year, he has demonstrated strong leadership skills in the wake of great change at the College. His work to advance the development of the Wegmans School of Pharmacy is a fine example of his focus and drive.”

Statement from William A. Carpenter
Supervisor, Town of Pittsford

“Don has been a tremendous communicator and collaborator with the Town of Pittsford. This has meant a lot to me and has helped to make a strong relationship between the College and the Town only stronger.”

Statement from The Honorable Francis Affronti ’63
New York State Supreme Court Justice

“It has been my deep honor to be associated with Dr. Bain, whose sole professional objective is to enhance the name of St. John Fisher College. Since his brief tenure as (Interim) President, it is readily apparent that, at his helm, the College has made monumental strides for the future, but importantly, he has continued to carry on the ideals and aspirations of our beloved Katherine Keough, with whom he worked side by side.”

St. John Fisher College is an independent, liberal arts institution in the Catholic tradition of American higher education. Guided since its inception in 1948 by the educational philosophy of the Congregation of St. Basil, the College emphasizes liberal learning for students in traditional academic disciplines, as well as for those in more directly career-oriented fields. The College welcomes qualified students, faculty, and staff regardless of religious or cultural background.

The campus is situated on 154 park-like acres—a beautiful setting for 20 modern buildings and a warm, friendly campus community of nearly 2,500 full-time and 1,000 part-time students. The College now offers 30 academic majors in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, business, and nursing, as well as 10 pre-professional programs. Fisher also offers 12 graduate programs.

St. John Fisher College Dedicates Keough Hall and the New Campus Center

PITTSFORD, N.Y., September 23, 2005—St. John Fisher College today dedicated the College’s two newest buildings—Keough Hall, a 220-bed student residence hall, and the Campus Center.

In October of 2004, Fisher’s Board of Trustees announced that the new 47,000 square-foot residence hall that was then under construction would be named after Katherine E. Keough, the College’s late President. During Dr. Keough’s tenure at Fisher, the number of resident students doubled and the undergraduate student population increased by over fifty percent.

Inside Keough Hall, there is a large photographic mural depicting highlights of Dr. Keough’s years as President of Fisher. “We thought that this mural would be a fitting tribute to Dr. Keough,” said Dr. Donald E. Bain, Interim President of St. John Fisher College. “It will serve to inform future generations of Fisher students about her significant contributions to the College.”

With record numbers of students living on campus, there has been for several years a corresponding desire to expand opportunities for campus life. The 30,000 square-foot Campus Center was designed to fill that need. A number of student leaders were actively involved in the process, from concept to layout/design and décor.

The first floor of the Campus Center, which is attached to the south side of the Ward/Haffey complex, has a large student gathering space, complete with a small stage for performances; offices for student clubs and organizations, including Student Government Association, Student Activities Board, Resident Student Association, and Commuter Council; and the College bookstore. The second floor houses the Offices of the Dean of Students, Residential Life, Campus Life, and Campus Ministry.

Joining Dr. Bain at the dedication were Joseph Rulison ’78, Chair of the Board of Trustees; José J. Coronas, Vice Chair of the Board; members of the Board of Trustees; Steven Keough, Dr. Keough’s son; and members of the campus community.

Rescheduled Gavin DeGraw Concert To Benefit Hurricane Katrina Relief

PITTSFORD, N.Y., September 13, 2005—St. John Fisher College is pleased to announce the musical performance of pop-soul artist Gavin DeGraw on Friday, September 30, 2005, in the Student Life Center. Re-scheduled from last spring, funding from this concert will be used as a timely means to augment Hurricane Katrina relief efforts at St. John Fisher College. One dollar from each ticket sold will be contributed toward the relief funding.

Sponsored by Fisher’s student-run committee, ticket prices are $7.00 for full-time Fisher students; $12.00 for Fisher faculty, staff, part-time and graduate students; $15.00 for general admission; and $20.00 at the door. Tickets can be purchased online at www.gavindegraw.com or at Fisher in the Office of Campus Life, located in the Campus Center.  Show time is set for 9 p.m. with doors opening at 8 p.m.

DeGraw, a 28-year-old New York native, will headline the show with songs from his albums “Chariot” and “Chariot Stripped” that blend musical categories of soul, rock, and pop into one harmonious sound. Similar sounds by opening musical acts will prime the audience for DeGraw’s collection of upbeat piano and guitar playing.

DeGraw, once ranked at the top of Billboard’s Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart for his second single “I Don’t Want To Be,” has been perfecting his musical talent since the age of eight. Moving to New York City in 1998 with his brother in hopes of achieving musical success, DeGraw’s raspy voice and expressive lyrics were discovered among the Manhattan club elite in 2002 by J Records.

After signing a multi-album deal with the label that spring, DeGraw released his debut album “Chariot” in 2003 and moved from playing the Manhattan club scene to opening for musicians like Michelle Branch.

DeGraw’s second single, “I Don’t Want To Be” from “Chariot” also became the theme song to the WB network’s television show “One Tree Hill,” where it continues to gain recognition. Although DeGraw tries to stay modest by recognizing his musical journey thus far, his rhythmic talent and songs are already being compared to musical icons Elton John, Billy Joel and Van Morrison.

Continuing his success, in July 2004, DeGraw released his second album, “Chariot Stripped,” an acoustic live studio recording of his original album inspired by his time spent on the road.

St. John Fisher College Breaks Ground for the Wegmans School of Pharmacy Building

PITTSFORD, N.Y., September 12, 2005—St. John Fisher College today broke ground for the College’s newest academic building to house the Wegmans School of Pharmacy. Dr. Donald Bain, Interim President of the College, was joined by members of the Wegman family, along with faculty, staff, trustees, and friends of the College. In January of this year, the College announced that Robert B. Wegman had donated $5 million to fund the creation of the School of Pharmacy.

The 37,000 square-foot building bearing Mr. Wegman’s name will be a three-story structure adjacent to the Skalny Science Center. It will contain classrooms, lab space, and offices for faculty and administration. It will be connected to the Science Center by a two-story atrium.

“Robert Wegman is an individual who is committed to education and to the Rochester community,” said Dr. Bain, Interim President of the College. “The creation of the Wegmans School of Pharmacy will go a long way toward alleviating the growing shortage of qualified pharmacists in Western New York.”

Also participating in the groundbreaking ceremony was Dr. Scott Swigart, the newly appointed Dean of the Wegmans School of Pharmacy. Formerly the founding Dean of the School of Pharmacy at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida, Dr. Swigart will soon begin work shaping the curriculum for the PharmD program, recruiting faculty for the School, and helping finalize the design of the building.

The Wegmans School of Pharmacy building is scheduled to be operational by fall 2006, when the College expects to welcome its first class of PharmD students.

St. John Fisher College Announces Response to Hurricane Katrina

PITTSFORD, N.Y., September 2, 2005—St. John Fisher College has made public its plans to assist those impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

As new students and upperclassmen return to campus this weekend, they will be invited to donate to an Emergency Relief Fund. Student leaders will collect money at check-in that will then be donated to one of the emergency relief organizations currently providing services in the Gulf Coast region.

In addition, Fisher will identify one college in the impacted area to receive donations from faculty and staff. The funds collected will be given to the institution to use in rebuilding their facilities, outfitting their classrooms, or providing relief for their employees.

“We are stunned and saddened by the magnitude of this tragedy,” said Dr. Donald E. Bain, Interim President of St. John Fisher College. “These initiatives are our way of trying to help those whose lives have been torn apart by this disaster.”

More details of these plans will be forthcoming as they are available.

Call for Nominations for St. John Fisher College’s Unique Scholarships

PITTSFORD, N.Y., September 1, 2005—St. John Fisher College is pleased to issue a call for nominations for its two unique scholarship programs—the Service Scholarship and the First Generation Scholarship.

The Service Scholarship recognizes and rewards high school seniors who demonstrate an ongoing interest in serving the needs of others through a commitment to community service. Each year, up to 36 students receive the scholarship award, which equals one-third of the total yearly cost of Fisher’s tuition, fees, and room and board for four years ($9,300 in 2005-2006).

In 1998, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the College announced the Fannie & Sam Constantino First Generation Scholarship Program, designed to provide financial assistance to students whoseparents did not attend a post-secondary institution. Since its founding, Fisher has enrolled a high percentage of first generation college students. Creating this scholarship was the College’s way of renewing its commitment to today’s first generation students. Up to thirty-six scholarships are awarded each year, ranging from $5,000 to one-third of resident student costs per year ($9,300 in 2005-2006). The exact scholarship amount is determined based on financial need.

To be considered for either scholarship, students must be nominated by a high school counselor or teacher, employer, community leader, or pastor. In addition, nominees must be high school seniors planning to attend St. John Fisher College in the fall semester immediately following their graduation from high school.

Nominations and applications for admission must be received by the following dates:

         Preferred date: December 9, 2005

Final date: Must be postmarked no later than January 13, 2006.

To request a nomination packet for either scholarship, please call the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at (585) 385-8064 or (800) 444-4640. You may also visit the Fisher website at http://www.sjfc.edu/admissions/forms.asp to download a nomination packet.

PITTSFORD, NY, August 24, 2005—St. John Fisher College has been named to the list of America’s Best Colleges 2006 by U.S.News & World Report. Fisher was recognized in the Best Universities—Master’s category in the North Region. Schools in this category provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs. Fisher is among a select group of schools chosen for this recognition.

In the past decade, St. John Fisher College has emerged as one of the most vibrant colleges in upstate New York. Many factors have combined to create change, including the development of new programs and academic initiatives, special events that have increased Fisher’s public profile and generated new interest in the College, and a successful capital campaign.

“This designation is encouraging in that it affirms the value of a Fisher education,” said Dr. Donald Bain, Interim President of the College. “Over the last few years, the Fisher community has been consistently focused on improving the learning environment for our students—a focus that has resulted in increased enrollment, improved retention and graduation rates, and increased levels of philanthropic support.”

In addition to adding new more than 20 academic programs, over the last several years the College has created the Ronald L. Bittner School of Business, the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education, the School of Arts and Sciences, and the proposed Wegmans School of Pharmacy. The Bittner School received the prestigious Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation, an honor afforded to less than 500 institutions worldwide.

Fisher has also invested more than $75M over the last seven years in new construction and renovations to existing academic, residential, and athletic facilities. The College has just completed a 220-bed residence hall and a campus center that will house many of the more than 50 student clubs and organizations. Both buildings will open this fall.

St. John Fisher College currently enrolls 3,500 students, including 2,500 full-time undergraduates and 1,000 part-time and graduate students.

Fisher’s Mark Robinson Named Division III Offensive Player of the Year

PITTSFORD, N.Y., July 13, 2005 — St. John Fisher College’s Mark Robinson (Bath-Haverling/Bath) has been named as Lindy’s 2005 Preseason Division III Offensive Player of the Year. Robinson was also named to the publication’s All-American Offensive First Team.

This is the 24th consecutive year Lindy’s has produced an annual college football preview. The magazine calls itself, “America’s Leading Football Authority.”

This is the second preseason honor given Robinson. Last month he was named to Street & Smith’s College Football Division III All-America Offensive First Team.

Robinson is the top returning player in Division III football for yards rushing (2,194) and all-purpose yards (2,426). His 25 touchdowns last fall are also the most by any returning player.

As a sophomore, Robinson set the Fisher single-season record for rushing yards (2,194), all-purpose yards (2,426), rushing attempts (386) and touchdowns (25) last fall. The junior tailback became just the ninth player in NCAA Division III history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season, and his 2,194 yards ranks fifth all-time in a single season in Division III. He also set the College’s single-game touchdown record with five, and finished 2004 second in Division III in both rushing and all-purpose yards, as well as ninth in scoring.

Robinson guided Fisher to the most successful season in the program’s 18-year history, as the Cardinals finished the year with a 10-2 overall record, including victories over Ithaca College, SUNY Brockport and Springfield College. Despite playing arguably the toughest schedule in Division III, Fisher finished the regular season No. 1 in Upstate New York and No. 11 in the nation. The Cardinals also claimed their first Empire 8 Conference title last fall and advanced to the field of 16 in the Division III Championship for the first time.

Last winter, Robinson was selected to the D3football.com All-American First Team, and NCAA Division III Football Gazette All-American Second Team. He also received All-Region honors and was selected to the ECAC Northwest and the Empire 8 Conference First Teams.

A communication/journalism major, Robinson was the only underclassman named to the 2004 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Football First Team.

Fisher, ranked 21st nationally in the Street & Smith’s preseason poll, will open the 2005 season on September 3rd at King’s College.
