Master of Science in International Studies Curriculum
A degree requires 36 credit-hours; most courses are three credit-hours each. A typical schedule for a part-time student taking late afternoon or evening classes would be six semesters of study carrying two courses each semester. Core Courses:The six required core courses are intended to introduce students to the broad range of topics and themes that this interdisciplinary field covers. These include: global politics, theory and research methods, international economics, historical analysis and comparative management systems, as well as a foundation course that addresses post-academic trends and current research interests in the discipline. Training in the core prepares students for advanced work in functional policy areas and geographic regional analysis. Functional/Regional Electives:In addition to the six core courses, all students take five courses from the Functional and Regional elective categories. The purpose of these courses is to ensure that each student develops skills in analyzing issues from both a categorical perspective—such as global politics, international security and comparative economics—and a geo-strategic perspective from the point of view of specific areas such as Asia, Latin America, Europe and Africa. A directed research project is the culminating experience for the program.
