Master of Science in International StudiesSt. John Fisher College

The Curriculum

The curriculum of the M.S. in International Studies Program is well organized to present the subject matter to students in such a way as to establish a relationship between topics and to expose the student to all key facets of International Studies. Additionally, it features the most qualified teaching personnel for each course and meets the academic requirements of numerous state accrediting bodies. It is a 36-credit-hour program which is designed to be completed taking classes on a part-time basis over the course of three years. As most of the students will have work, child care or other responsibilities during the day, the program meets entirely in an evening format.

Students in this program will benefit from studying what are some of the more recent features of International Studies, including international security and global economics. The Program offers a 21st century global perspective to better prepare the student for leadership positions. Therefore, the director of the program and the faculty will continue to utilize their research of the field and related topics to present a curriculum that remains mainstream and cutting-edge as we enter the next century.

Core Courses

There are six required core courses which introduce students to the broad range of topics and themes that this interdisciplinary field covers. These include: global politics, theory and research methods, international economics, historical analysis and comparative management systems, as well as a foundation course that addresses post-academic trends and current research interests in the discipline. Training in the core prepares students for advanced work in functional policy areas and geographic regional analysis.

Functional/Regional Electives

Electives are divided into Functional and Regional categories to ensure that each student develops skills in analyzing issues from both a categorical perspective —- such as global politics, international security and comparative economics — and a geo-strategic perspective from the point of view of specific areas such as Latin America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Russia.

Students who are interested in specializing in a particular region are encouraged to develop a language proficiency; however, there is no language requirement for this program.

Foreign Study

Commitment to international education is part of the liberal arts philosophy of the College. The Foreign Study Program extends the campus curriculum to include offerings with 56 programs around the world. Official affiliation arrangements with the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS), Central College Abroad, the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) and the American University in Cairo, Egypt, provide our students with the opportunity of an academic experience not only in Europe, but also in Central Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa.
