What TO Bring

Moving In

  • Cart/dolly to transport items into your room
    Orientation staff is available to assist with freshmen move-in
  • Crates, bins or other storage containers

Bathroom and Personal Care

  • First aid kit, aspirin, Band-Aids, cough drops, tissues
  • Shower caddy
  • Shower shoes

Cleaning

  • Cleaning supplies for your room
    Murphy Hall & Michaelhouse community bathrooms are cleaned by Facilities Services staff. Students are responsible for cleaning their living space.
  • Paper towels
  • Recycle container
  • Trash container
  • Vacuum

Documents

  • Medical insurance card (more information)
  • Property/rental insurance card (optional)*

Food Preparation & Storage

  • Can opener (handheld)
  • Coffee maker or Keurig (with auto shutoff)
  • Dish cloth & dish soap
  • Microwave (700 watt maximum)
    Green Alternative: Energy Star rated models; public microwaves are also available on each floor
  • Microwave-safe dishes (dishes, cups, mugs, bowls, utensils)
  • Refrigerator (1.5 amp maximum)

Linens & Laundry

  • Clothes hangers
  • Iron (with auto shutoff)
  • Laundry supplies (HE or standard detergent, softener, basket)
    Washers and dryers are free and available in each residence hall

  • Twin extra-long bedding (all beds are 80")

Organizing Your Room

  • Alarm clock
  • Blue painter's tape to hang posters
  • Desk light (non-halogen)
    Green Alternative: Look for CFL or LED light bulbs

  • Power strip (UL approved with on/off switch)
    Extension cords and multi-plug adapters are prohibited

*Property/rental insurance: The College assumes no responsibility for any damage to, or loss of, your personal property. You should obtain appropriate insurance either through your families' homeowner policy or separate renter's insurance policy. You can find information about property insurance from your insurance provider or search online under "student property insurance."


What NOT TO Bring

  • Weapons of any kind or anything that can be mistaken for a weapon, including KNIVES
  • Illegal drugs
  • Any fire hazard*, including:
    • Incense and candles
    • Fireworks
    • Cooking appliances (hot plates, grills, toasters, toaster ovens, electric frying pans)
    • Halogen lamps, medusa/multi-head lamps with plastic shades, and neon signs
    • Extension cords and multi-plug adapters
    • Area rugs (all rooms are carpeted)
    • Electric or fuel heaters/space heaters
    • Personal/window air conditioners
  • Amplified musical instruments, drums, or amplifiers
  • Toilet paper
    Provided in both community and private bathrooms
  • Shower curtains
    Provided in both community and private bathrooms
  • Pets other than fish (10 gallon tank maximum)
  • Bed risers/cinder blocks, furniture lofts
  • Wi-Fi or wired routers, switches

*Fire Hazards: All electrical appliances used for cooking food are prohibited in residence hall rooms. All other appliances such as irons, hair dryers, TVs, radios, etc. should be used with caution. In addition, all appliances, extension bar outlets and electrical hook-ups must have a UL approved label attached. The College makes periodic fire/safety inspections of all rooms during the year and reserves the right to remove all items considered to be a fire hazard. New York State codes prohibit cooking in residence hall rooms, fastening any combustible material to any ceilings, or covering any fire alarm equipment in the residence hall rooms.
