Students Get a Taste of Hunger

On Friday, November 4, over 100 students, faculty, and staff got a taste of hunger at the annual Hunger Banquet, sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity Programs, Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education, and Students With A Vision. The event served as the conclusion to another successful Four Freedoms Week.

Participants randomly received a ticket placing them in one of three socio-economic classes. According to the ticket “status,” guests had a specific type of meal. Some dined around tables dressed with linens and fine china, others ate on the floor using plasticware and paper plates.

And for the first time, local organizations fighting the problem of hunger on a daily basis attended the banquet. They included some of the College’s service-learning partners, including Foodlink, Sojourner House, Bethany House, Catholic Family Center Sanctuary House and Women’s Place, VOA Emergency Shelter, and Third Presbyterian Church. Students were able to speak with organization representatives to find out more about how they might be able to help throughout the year.

Admission to the event was free, but students were asked to bring canned food items for The Ibero Emergency Services Program, a local organization that provides those in need with tools and resources to achieve social and economic self-sufficiency. The organization’s services cover children, youths, seniors, education, employment, housing, families, and services to the developmentally disabled.
