Hill and White Named as 2011-2012 Recipients of Excellus Undergraduate Diversity Scholarship
As part of its Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, St. John Fisher College announced the 2011-2012 recipients of the Excellus BlueCross BlueShield Undergraduate Diversity Scholarship. Ms. Yesenia Garcia-Key, Community Engagement Coordinator, Excellus BlueCross Blue Shield, presented Latasha Hill ’13 and Quintell White ’14 with $500 scholarships in recognition of their involvement in Fisher clubs and organizations whose programs reflect a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice.
Hill is pursuing a dual major in Early Childhood Education and Special Education. She is involved with Fisher’s Black Student Union, and held the office of President in 2010-2011.
A native of Rochester, Hill has completed fieldwork at Genesee Community Charter School, Rochester Science Center, and Schools No. 17, 22, and 2. She has also spent time volunteering at Cerebral Palsy of Rochester, St. Paul Holy Believers Church, Special Olympics, and the Rochester Museum and Science Center.
While not in class or volunteering, she works at Wegmans, where she has been an employee since 2006. This past summer, she graduated from the Wegmans Store Operations Intern Program.
After Fisher, Hill plans to pursue her master’s degree in education.
White, also a native of Rochester, is a Business Management major. He is a member of several campus organizations, including the Black Student Union and Arts in Motion, and was previously a member of the Latino Student Union. In 2011, he served as the co-chair of the College’s Annual Day of Celebration. He has also been a part of the Future Business Leaders’ Experience at RIT.
He was named a 2010 Black Scholar, and has been the recipient of the IBERO Hispanic Scholarship and the Dominic and June Piazza Minority Scholarship.
Excellus BlueCross BlueShield began the scholarship program at Fisher during the 2005-2006 academic year. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to two full-time sophomore, junior, or senior Fisher students. Excellus Diversity Scholars serve as student co-chairs for the College’s Day of Celebration Planning Committee or for another designated campus-wide initiative.
