Symposium: Men as Role Models for Gender Justice

Men have a critical role to play in the journey to gender equity. This program includes a panel presentation of men’s experiences as allies to women, to the LGBTQ community, and to those whose gender identity and expression challenge traditional notions of gender as binary. LGBTQ Discussion Panel

It is human nature to label people and objects. It is how we create order and make sense of the world. Unfortunately, labeling and stereotyping people can lead to a flawed understanding of a culture. In this fun and interactive panel presentation, participants will have an opportunity to challenge themselves on long held stereotypes and beliefs. Our panel will consist of individuals who identify as straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. Our sixth panelist will be a “wild card.” Participants must ask the panelist questions and try to guess how the panelists identify. Direct questions about sexual behaviors are not allowed, for example: “Who was the last person you had sex with?” Questions about gender expression are fair game, for example: “Do you own Birkenstocks?” This presentation is sure to create lots of laughter but it is also a great opportunity for self-reflection and in depth discussions around the power of stereotyping in a safe and...

The CampusOut Summit

Hosted by Women and Gender Studies This is a first-of-its-kind event with Fisher at the forefront. The goal is to bring the e-boards of as many of the nine local colleges as possible to our campus to discuss social activism around queer issues. Students will also network with one another and learn how to get involved with  the Gay Alliance of Genesee Valley (GAGV) and the Rochester queer community. Gathering of Griots Forum in African American Culture

Coal Black Voices Unfurling the Flag: An Intimate Evening with Affrilachian Founder-Poet Frank X. Walker Poet Frank X Walker (2014 NACCP Image Award winner; Kentucky 2013-14 Poet Laureate; and Lannan Literary Fellowship poetry award winner) will be reading a selection of poems from his recent collections. "Affrilachia," a term coined by Frank X Walker, is defined as his responsibility "to say as loudly and often as possible that people and artists of color are part of the past and present of the multi-state Appalachian region extending from northern Mississippi to southern New York." Multidisciplinary artist and University of Kentucky faculty member, Walker is a native of Danville, Ky. and a graduate of the University of Kentucky. He received his MFA in Writing at Spalding University. Walker has lectured, conducted workshops, and read poetry at over 300 national conferences and universities. This event empowers Latinas ages from 7 to 18, encouraging them to feel good about themselves and be proud to be Latinas. It is an opportunity for young girls to celebrate who they are, with other girls just like them, and learn about ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! (SUSL) information and resources.
