Why did you sign up for JASY 2014?: I was immediately interested in JASY when I first received the email to apply. I have wanted to participate in a service trip outside the U.S. ever since high school. I've wanted to go somewhere where others do not think to travel; to connect with people who live completely different lives but are so full of life and happiness. These experiences offer so much to learn and become life-changing. And I believe Jamaica is my opportunity to connect with children and bring happiness to both our lives, not just for a week but for a lifetime.

Role at JASY Camp: Yellow Team Sports Ambassador.

Karlee Platts '14

Karlee Platts

Hometown: Mohawk, New York

Major/Minor: Biology Major, Chemistry Minor

Why did you sign up for JASY Camp? I have had my eye on this service mission trip since I was a freshman! I have spent four years helping with different community service projects here in the Rochester area so I really am looking forward to making a difference in an area where the need is completely different and in some ways, maybe more significant.

One important key to service is being able to understand and relate to those you are helping, and I firmly believe that you can learn something from every person you meet, no matter how different. I am excited to really immerse myself in the Jamaican culture and learn as much as I can about their way of life, hopefully bringing me new perspective.

Role at JASY Camp: I am super excited to be one of the coaches! I think that being a coach involves a lot around caring about the success of your team and striving to make a connection with each of the campers. Through communication and hard work, my goal is to support and motivate my team to have a fun, positive week! TEAM RED!
