Countdown to Commencement – Joe Smith

02/06/2012

This week’s “Countdown to Commencement” video features Joe Smith, a History major. He was nominated by Sally Vaughan, Director of Community Service, and Dr. Rick DeJesús-Rueff, Vice President of Student Affairs and Diversity Initiatives.

Smith has been involved with the Student Government Association (SGA) since the moment he stepped foot on campus, serving as his class president all four years. He was also a Resident Student Association (RSA) floor representative, member of the History Club, the New York State Western Region Chair of the Young Republicans, member of the First Generation Scholars E-Board, and an open house volunteer. This past year, he was selected to lead the campus’ first Election Fellows/Inspectors Program, which encouraged students to become registered voters.

“Joe’s leadership skills were evident as a freshman, and he has continued to lead in a variety of activities, particularly his class and his First Generation scholarship class,” said Vaughan. “I will remember his ‘can do’ attitude. In many ways, he has been a ‘go to’ person for me regarding scholarship issues, fundraising for the JASY trip, hosting open houses, and other situations.”

During his time here, he has been the recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award, recognizing his service efforts totaling over 100 hours. He has also been named the SGA Senator of the Year, inducted into the Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society, and has made the Dean’s List each semester.

Vaughan says Smith’s campus involvement has impacted the Fisher community in a positive way.

“He dares to speak up when others fear to do so or when his words may be unpopular. His commitment to service has been outstanding, and through those efforts, his leadership skills were enhanced,” she said.

DeJesús-Rueff says he will remember Smith because he was “always willing to get involved, and sought out leadership opportunities.”

Smith is currently studying for his LSATs and hopes to attend law school in the future. Both Vaughan and DeJesús-Rueff predict that he will lead a successful career and continue his passion for service.

Meet this week’s featured senior, Joe Smith! Best of luck to you, from everyone in the Fisher family!
