King For A Day

On January 15, St. John Fisher and Nazareth Colleges joined forces, along with Rochester Cares and Home Depot, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. to spend the Day of Service lending a helping hand to the community. Over 100 students volunteered at Jefferson High School to paint, while another 100 students volunteered at other non-profits throughout the area including Foodlink, Saint’s Place, and St. Mary’s Closet.

While the focus was on King and his giving nature, he was not the only influential person whose words were present at the event. The words of Mahatma Gandhi were displayed on the volunteers’ yellow t-shirts, which read, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” That very notion could be seen on the many eager faces who worked on the various community projects. The students received a special taped message from Jean-Claude Brizard, Rochester Superintendent of Schools, thanking them for their work and reminding them that King’s message of social justice could be made possible through education.

The Fisher and Naz students worked together in teams of 25, and they also had the opportunity to meet members from other organizations including Americorps. Following the event, there was a discussion and reflection among the volunteers about their service that day. Lunch was provided by Wegmans.
