At an early evening reception on November 17, St. John Fisher College awarded its eighth annual Justinian Medal to Richard A. Calabrese '57. In addition, the College issued a special citation and posthumous recognition of Norman A. Palmiere, Sr., Esq. '57, who was a college classmate and close personal friend of Calabrese.

St. John Fisher College will host "Philosophy Day: Philosophy and the Catholic Heritage" on Wednesday, November 18 and Thursday, November 19 in the Midlevel of the Golisano Gateway on campus. "World Philosophy Day" is observed globally as an occasion for people to reflect upon the importance of critical thinking, world peace, international cooperation, and the love of wisdom. The sessions at Fisher are free and open to the public.

Lavery Library's latest exhibit, "El Campo: La Crisis En Silencio (Rural Mexico's Silent Crisis)," is on display through December 22 at St. John Fisher College. The exhibit features photographs by Joseph Sorrentino, taken during his trips to rural Mexico in 2003 and 2008. Featured in the Lower Level Gallery, the exhibit is free and open to the public.

The art gallery at the Joseph S. Skalny Welcome Center at St. John Fisher College will open a new exhibit on Friday, November 6. "Verde Veneciano, Azul Borincano" will be on display through February 5, 2010, and is free and open to the public. The exhibit features the artistic renderings of photographer Edward Witasek. The highlights of the work displayed are the intense, close-up portraits of statues, mausoleums, and tombs from cemeteries around the world.

On Friday, November 6, Dr. Mark Rice, Associate Professor of American Studies, and Jeremy Sarachan, Assistant Professor of Communication/Journalism, presented "Facebook, Twitter, and iPhones: How Social Networking and Mobile Technologies Improve Learning and Prepare Students for Careers in the 21st Century." The presentation was part of St. John Fisher College's First Friday Faculty Lecture Series.

The Rochester City School District (RCSD) Board of Education and the Superintendent of Schools have selected Dr. Richard DeJesús-Rueff, Vice President for Student Affairs and Diversity Initiatives at St. John Fisher College, and Nathalia Martinez '09 as award recipients. DeJesús-Rueff received the Volunteer Education Award, while Martinez was presented with the Community Service Award. Both were honored at the RCSD's Hispanic Heritage Celebration on October 22.

In celebration of Halloween, St. John Fisher College hosted "It's Witchcraft: The Legends and Realities of Witches," on Thursday, October 29 and Friday, October 30.
Sponsored by the Health Humanities Committee of St. John Fisher College, the event was a multidisciplinary examination of the continuing relevance of understanding the connection of witchcraft to contemporary medical issues.

Irish America Magazine have named Dr. Donald E. Bain, President of St. John Fisher College, to its Irish Education 100 list. The list honors the nation's top 100 education professionals of Irish descent.

Dr. Marilyn Dollinger, Associate Dean of the Wegmans School of Nursing at St. John Fisher College, has been named the recipient of the 2009 New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) Legislative Award. Given annually, the award recognizes nurses who make significant contributions to the profession in the legislative arena.

At the Rochester Business Ethics Awards Luncheon on September 22, St. John Fisher College senior Elina Katro was named the recipient of a $5,000 scholarship. The scholarship, given each year to a Bittner School of Business student, is sponsored by the Rochester Business Ethics Foundation.
