Dever Appointed to Lead Academy for Leadership in Long-Term Care

Dr. Kathleen Dever, Assistant Professor in the Wegmans School of Nursing, was recently named the Executive Director of the newly formed Academy for Leadership in Long-Term Care, a collaborative initiative of the Rochester Senior Care Alliance (RSCA) and the Wegmans School of Nursing.

The Academy for Leadership in Long-Term Care provides leadership training for nurses in long-term care; the development of networking opportunities to share leadership best practices; and the creation of programs to support clinical experiences and summer internships for undergraduate nursing students in geriatrics and long-term care. The Academy is the result of a collaborative approach to address Rochester’s urgent need to build a skilled, diverse, and committed nursing workforce in long-term care in preparation for the aging of the baby boomer generation.

“Given the projected shortage of nurses in the Rochester area, the aging of our local population, and the fact that a significant percentage of registered nurses are reaching retirement age, we recognize the urgency of addressing nursing workforce issues. The development of the Academy helps the community address issues in regional health care planning, namely long-term care nurse retention, recruitment, and best practices,” said Dr. Marilyn Dollinger, Associate Dean of the Wegmans School of Nursing.

Dever, a Brighton resident, is a graduate of the Marquette University School of Nursing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she received an RN/BS in Nursing. She completed an M.S. in Nursing Administration at Fisher, and an Ed.D. in Executive Leadership from the College’s Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education.

She serves as a board member for The Friendly Home, Rochester Presbyterian Home, and the Delta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. Dever’s current professional memberships include the American Nurses Association, the New York State Nurses Association, the Genesee Valley Nurses Association, and FLONE/NYONE (Finger Lakes Organization of Nurse Executives/ New York Organization of Nurse Executives).

Partners in the project include The Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Northwest Health Foundation, the Wegmans School of Nursing at St. John Fisher College, and RSCA. RSCA is a consortium of the five leading non-profit long-term care organizations in Monroe County: The Friendly Home, Episcopal SeniorLife Communities, Jewish Senior Life, St. Ann’s Community, and St. John’s Senior Communities.
