Steve Terrigino ’89 Named Outstanding Accounting Alumnus of the Year at St. John Fisher College
St. John Fisher College held its annual Accounting Awards Banquet on March 20, and announced that Steve Terrigino ’89 was named the 2014 Outstanding Accounting Alumnus of the Year. Terrigino is a Partner with The Bonadio Group, Certified Public Accountants.
The award recognizes an accounting alumnus or alumna for achievement in the following three categories: noteworthy career achievement, significant humanitarian effort, and outstanding contribution to the Fisher community.
Terrigino has been with The Bonadio Group since 1995, and is one of the firm’s “home grown” partners, having risen through the ranks to become a Partner in their Small Business Advisory Group. Terrigino’s practice specializes in small, closely held businesses. He is responsible for providing accounting and business advice to hundreds of companies, their owners, and their families. In addition, he assists as team leader for Bonadio’s other Small Business Practices located throughout New York State.
Terrigino has volunteered for the College since 1997 as a member of the Alumni Board of Directors, which he served for six years, spending two years as Vice Chairman and three years as Chairman. He also served on the College’s Board of Trustees for three years as a representative of the Alumni Board. Additionally, he was selected by Dr. Katherine Keough, Fisher’s former president, to serve on the long-term strategic planning committee as an alumni representative. Most recently, he is one of the founding members of the St. John Fisher College Accounting Alumni Society, and currently serves as its chairperson. In 2011, Terrigino was honored by the College’s School of Business with The Dean’s Medal for Outstanding Service.
In addition, Terrigino is a member of the Medical Group Management Association, New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). He has worked with the AICPA to help set the minimum passing standards for the uniform CPA examination. He also served on the board of the Monroe County Industrial Development Corporation and provided seminars for start-up businesses for the Urban League of Greater Rochester and S.C.O.R.E. Terrigino has also been a recipient of the Rochester Business Journal’s prestigious Forty Under 40 Award.
Currently, Terrigino is a member of the Golisano Children’s Hospital Board of Directors and was recently named to their Executive Committee.
The College also awarded the Rising Star Award to six alumni at the banquet. The award is given to alumni who have found success early in their careers. Honorees are chosen based on career achievements, involvement with both the community and the College, and demonstrated potential for even greater success as their accounting careers mature. The winners included: Rodney Asse ’05; Jeremiah Ditch ’04; Dana Fritz ’08; Stacy Humennyj ’06; Mike Messenger ’06; and Michelle Pyzik ’06.
Asse is the District Treasurer for the Greece Central School District and has been with the district since 2012. In this role, he prepares and monitors short and long-term cash flows for district funds; coordinates the school property tax collection process with town and county offices; ensures proper safeguards for the custody, deposit, and investment of $200 million of public funds; and ensures proper monitoring over the preparation of account receivable invoices and outstanding balances, among many other responsibilities. Prior to his work in Greece, he was a Senior Examiner for the New York State Office of the State Comptroller in the Local Government and School Accountability Division.
He serves as a mentor and motivational speaker for various colleges, including Fisher, Monroe Community College, and the State University of New York at Brockport, as well as the Greece Central School District, Rochester City School District, and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. Additionally, he is a member of the Brighton Rotary and the Sigma Beta Delta International Honor Society.
Ditch is a Manager of the Small Business Division at The Bonadio Group, where he has been since 2004. He has also worked in the firm’s Audit Division, and was a new hire orientation committee member for two years. In 2013, he was appointed to the firm’s state-wide Workflow Initiative Committee for the Small Business Division.
He is a past member of the New York State Society of CPAs, and served as a committee member of the organization’s COAP (Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession) committee for two years. COAP is a volunteer committee that plans a one week summer internship for high school students primarily from underprivileged schools. As a member of that committee, he coordinated a one day office visit at Bonadio for the students, which included a mock 1040 preparation class, trivia game, and presentations from various partners and professionals educating the students about the accounting profession.
Outside of work, Ditch volunteers in the Junior Achievement “JA in a Day” program, and serves as the treasurer of his son’s Cub Scout Pack 315 in Fairport.
Fritz is the Controller for the American Rock Salt Company, and has been there since 2012. Prior to that, she worked for Insero and Company for four years. She is a New York State CPA and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
In addition to her full-time position, she served on the Young CPA Committee of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants for two years. She assists with planning and executing of networking and charity events, and is involved with the York Central School District through speaking engagements to encourage students to consider careers in Accounting.
Humennyj is the Controller for PICS Telecom International Corporation, previously serving as the company’s Accounting Manager. After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Fisher, she worked for Insero and Company for three years. During that time, she earned her CPA license. She left Insero to join Paychex, where she worked for a short time before joining PICS Telecom International Corporation. As a student, she received the NYSSCPA Excellence in Accounting Award for highest GPA and her commitment to the field of Accounting.
An avid cycler, Humennyj recently completed a 40-mile ride in the Tour de Cure for the American Diabetes Association.
Messenger graduated from Fisher with a degree in Accounting and Sport Management, and went right to work for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). He was promoted to a Tax Manager at the firm in 2013, and prior to that role, served as a Senior Associate in the Tax Department. He is responsible for working on and reviewing various types of engagements that include tax provisions for SEC and privately held companies; tax returns (Corporation, S-Corporations, and Partnerships) for closely held companies and private foundations; and various returns for individuals, including personal, trust, gift, and estate returns. In addition to reviewing returns, he enjoys guiding, teaching, and helping his peers understand the tax code and the job at hand.
For the last three years, Messenger has mentored six teams at the PwC Tax Challenge at the College, a competition that involves helping students through a complex tax problem that culminates in a presentation to a panel of PwC Managers and Partners. And in 2012, he participated in the Alumni/Student Mentoring program.
Messenger is also actively involved with his church as a member of the finance and pastoral council for the last five years, and as a member of the parish’s strategic planning team.
Pyzik is an Audit Manager with The Bonadio Group where she started working after receiving her degree in Accounting and Business Management with a concentration in Corporate Finance. As a student, she was actively involved on campus as a member of the Student Activities Board, Spring Event Committee, and the Accounting Club. She was a First Generation Scholar, and did a variety of volunteering both on- and off-campus, including dancing at the Teddi Dance for Love. This year marked her 11th year as a dancer at the event.
After passing her CPA exam in 2012, she became a manager in the Tax-Exempt/Not-for-Profit Division at the firm. She became a member of Healthcare Financial Management Association in 2008, and served on their Technology Committee for two years.
Outside of work, Pyzik stays busy as a religious education and Sunday school teacher and volunteers at the Polish Festival every summer.
Since 1990, St. John Fisher College has presented the Outstanding Accounting Alumnus of the Year Award to 25 alumni. The awards are sponsored by the Department of Accounting and Finance in the School of Business.
