Fisher to Celebrate 9th Annual Philosophy Day

11/08/2011

St. John Fisher College will celebrate its 9th Annual Philosophy Day on Wednesday, November 16, and Thursday, November 17. “Philosophy and the Arts” will be held in the Midlevel of the Golisano Gateway on campus.

Philosophy Day, sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Culture Organization (UNESCO), and held on the purported birthday of Socrates, is observed throughout the world as an occasion for people to reflect upon the importance of critical thinking, world peace, international cooperation, and the love of wisdom. Fisher is the only college in the United States to participate, along with colleges and organizations in Albania, Ghana, Iran, Ireland, Morocco, Slovenia, and 27 other countries.

The opening session will be on November 16 at 6:30 p.m. with an address given by Dr. Rosemarie Tong, Professor in Health Care Ethics and Director of the Center for Professional and Applied Ethics, Department of Philosophy, at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She will present, “Global and Local Perspectives on Long-term Care for Elderly People.” She is the Past Coordinator of the International Network of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics, and currently serves as an Executive Board Member of the International Association of Bioethics. In addition, she is the Chair of the American Philosophical Association’s Committee on the Status of Women. She is a frequent panelist and judge for the National Institutes of Health, and a winner of the 1986 CASE National Professor of the Year Award.

Tong has authored or co-edited thirteen books, and has published over 100 articles on topics related to reproductive and genetic technology, biomedical research, feminist bioethics, and global bioethics. Most recently, she has presented at conferences in Australia, Finland, England, Mexico, and the Philippines. Her latest book, New Perspectives in Health Care Ethics: An Interdisciplinary Approach, was published in 2009. She received her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Temple University in 1978.

On November 17, sessions will begin at 8 a.m. and are scheduled through 9 p.m. Topics to be discussed include “The Arts Across the Curriculum at St. John Fisher College,” “Philosophy and Art in a High School Setting,” “Aesthetic Appreciation,” “Metaphysics, Aesthetics, and the Twilight Zone,” “Artists at Work,” “Art and Education,” and “Wither the Arts?” Presenters include faculty and students from St. John Fisher College, and other colleges, as well as a Rochester School District psychologist, and students from the School Without Walls in Rochester.

The closing session will feature poet B.K. Fischer, who will read from her newly published first book, Mutiny Gallery. It is described as a “road trip, an on-the-lam narrative in a sequence of poems, with the characters’ itinerary influenced by a book called Little Museums: Over 1000 Small (and Not So Small) American Showplaces.” Copies of the book will be available for sale.

Lavery Library will also have a special display by local artist Joe Thomson during the week of the event.

Philosophy Day is supported by the St. John Fisher College Department of Philosophy and Classical Studies, the Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity Programs, the Office of Alumni Relations, the William and Helen Cavanaugh Chair of Catholic Studies, and the Committee for the Saint Thomas More Center of Ethics.

All sessions are free and open to the public. For more information about Philosophy Day at St. John Fisher College, please contact Dr. Tim Madigan at (585) 385-5259 or tmadigan@sjfc.edu.
