PRIMA’s Inaugural “Gilda’s Cup” Raises $3,500 for Gilda’s Club of Rochester

Members of the St. John Fisher College student-run integrated marketing communications firm, The PRIMA Group, hosted the first annual “Gilda’s Cup” at Fisher and exceeded their expectations raising $3,500 for Gilda’s Club of Rochester.

With over 100 in attendance, the evening showcased the talents of five improv comedy groups including Fisher, Buffalo State, State University of New York at Oswego, and two groups from the Rochester Institute of Technology. The winning improv team was determined by a vote from the audience and Fisher’s own “Two Cardinals and Some Nuns” took the Gilda’s Cup!

According to Kathleen Marchaesi-Ciaraldi, adjunct professor and advisor of PRIMA, the objectives of this event were twofold. Individuals between the ages of 18-24 have the highest rate of new cancer diagnoses in Monroe County, and the group wanted to increase awareness among college-aged students of the support Gilda’s Club Rochester offers to anyone impacted by cancer. In addition, they wanted to raise funding to support the much-needed services Gilda’s Club offers free of charge. 

“What started as a teachable moment turned into a wonderful collaboration,” said Bob Russell, Executive Director of Gilda’s Club Rochester. “You have no idea how proud we are of this association with The PRIMA Group of St. John Fisher College.  It was plain and simple, a very memorable evening to be part of.”

Marchaesi-Ciaraldi said the 20 PRIMA students worked “incredibly hard” the last few months pulling together myriad details to ensure a successful event. She also said that the opportunity to work with a real client has proven to be a great learning experience.

“PRIMA is not an ordinary club on campus,” said Chloe Smith ’16, Creative Director for the group. “We’re a working agency filled with tech junkies, aspiring marketing gurus, and hyper creatives who are passionate about what we do for our school and community.”

Garrett Sisson ’15 took the lead in coordinating the collegiate talent.

“This event was a great opportunity for a number of schools across New York to come together and put on a show for a great cause,” said Sisson. “The groups loved being a part of the first-ever Gilda’s Cup and are excited to battle for the cup next year.”

Plans are already underway for “Gilda’s Cup 2015.”
