This week’s Club Column features The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Student Activities Board (SAB), and the Commuter Council.
Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
Q: What exactly does the SAAC do? How is it run?
A: The SAAC meets weekly to discuss student-athlete welfare issues, NCAA rules and interpretations, campus and community events, Empire 8 conference issues, and community service. Each team has two representatives that come to the meeting during free period. The meetings are informal, but productive!
Q: How often does the SAAC meet as a group?
A: Every Tuesday during the academic year.
Q: What is the mission of the SAAC?
A: NCAA definition: A SAAC is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations, and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA-member institution campuses.
Q: What are some of the biggest events SAAC is involved in every year?
A: The Giant Read, Battle of the Beaks, Special Olympics, Empire 8 Summit.

Q: How does the entire student body benefit from the SAAC’s work?
A: The work SAAC does benefits the student body directly and indirectly at times. In the past, SAAC has sponsored such events as a crash simulation on campus - a very real scenario on what can result from driving while intoxicated. SAAC has also had great representation in the community. Over the past several years, Fisher’s student athletes have participated in the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Special Olympics. This past year alone, Fisher had over 70 student athletes at that event – a great example to the community of what incredible students the College has.
Student Activities Board (SAB)
Q: What exactly does the SAB do?
A: SAB is dedicated to providing all students with quality programming and opportunities to enhance community-building through social interaction, leadership, and student development. SAB consists of nine executive board (e-board) members, as well as the committee. Any full-time, undergraduate student is eligible to join and apply for e-board positions each year.
Q: How often does the SAB meet as a group?
A: SAB has committee meetings every Monday night at 9:30 p.m. in the COP Conference Room (above the Campus Center). In addition, SAB has events on campus that it organizes for the Fisher community throughout the year.
Q: What are some of the biggest events SAB is involved in every year?
A: Each year, SAB organizes many big events including a freshman orientation event, Fall Fest, family weekend casino night, and home-grown game show. SAB also brings a variety of musicians, comedians, magicians, speakers, and hypnotists to campus throughout the year.
Q: How does the entire student body benefit from the SAB’s work?
A: SAB organizes and plans around 70 events each year. All of these events provide a fun and relaxing atmosphere for Fisher students to be able to spend their free time in positive ways. Some of the student activities fees that each student pays helps bring all of these events to campus, and also provides many raffle prizes at all of the events!
Q: Any advice to freshmen looking to get involved? Would the SAB be a good place to start?
A: Freshmen should definitely try and join at least a few different clubs and organizations in their first semester, and then decide from there what activity they are most interested in. SAB is a great place to start getting involved! It is one of the largest student organizations at Fisher, so it is a great way to meet many new and existing committee members, as well as help the e-board plan what is brought to campus. One great way to start getting involved with SAB would be attending the weekly meetings. Students can also go to SAB-sponsored events, and interact with other committee members.

Q: What exactly does the Commuter Council do?
A: Commuter Council is part of the “Big Four” at Fisher, which also include SGA, SAB, and RSA. The council attends to the needs and wants of commuter students, and helps sort out any problems they may have on campus, such as parking availability. Additionally, the council holds a lot of off-campus and on-campus events throughout the year.
Q: How often does the Commuter Council meet as a group? Does the group meet outside of campus for events as well?
A: The meetings are usually on Tuesdays during free period every two weeks, and will start October2. Lunch is provided!
Q: What are some of the biggest events Commuter Council is involved in every year?
A: One of the most popular events is bowling at Clover Lanes. The council provides pizza and three hours of gaming at a very low price, attracting nearly 100 students in the past. In addition, the council hosts movie trips. This year, the council will be co-sponsoring a midnight premiere of “Breaking Dawn: Part 2” with SAB – the council will cover half of the ticket cost.
Q: How many members are there? Who can join?
A: Students DO NOT have to be a commuter to participate in the council or its events. It is open (and encouraged) for all students. The council has two e-board members, a lot of faculty support, and are working hard to make life easier at Fisher for commuters.
Q: What are some initiatives the council hopes to work on this academic year?
A: With parking being a big issue, the council will be working closely with safety and security and also senate to try and open up more spaces and explore options for the next academic year. Commuter Council also hopes to increase involvement by having more events to promote the council.
