Beta Gamma Sigma Turns 100, Fisher Students Celebrate

Thursday, February 21, was no ordinary day for the St. John Fisher College School of Business; it marked the 100th birthday of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS), the International Honor Society serving business programs accredited by AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). And Fisher’s BGS chapter threw a birthday party.

Amanda Scheutzow, Management major and current BGS liaison for the College, organized the event with other BGS members.

“I have been trying to increase awareness of Beta Gamma Sigma and our chapter on campus, and thought that having a mini birthday party to celebrate its centennial might help,” said Scheutzow. “I wanted to remind members that this is a special day and that being a lifetime member does matter.”

BGS BirthdayFaculty, staff, students, and current BGS members attended the celebration in the Campus Center Atrium. Dr. David Martin, Dean of the School of Business, and Dr. Jason Berman, Professor of Management, served as emcees and came dressed in their regalia. Each said a few words on behalf of Fisher’s BGS chapter, and stressed the important significance and academic achievement that is associated with being a BGS member, and the lifetime benefits and career connections that are available to members after graduation. Additionally, they talked about some of the service projects the Fisher chapter has tackled.

A recent example Berman highlighted was when Fisher BGS members participated in a Day of Service which involved going to School No. 19 and reading stories to the students, all while dressed in Halloween costumes. According to Berman, BGS was so impressed with the service that the Fisher students displayed, they granted a $250 scholarship to the chapter. During the birthday celebration, the surprise scholarship was awarded to BGS member Katie Fandrich, an Accounting student, who was part of the winning team at the 2013 Deloitte Tax Competition.

Scheutzow finished the celebration by handing out raffle prizes, singing “Happy Birthday,” and cutting the cake.

“The celebration only lasted a half hour, but its impact may be felt long afterward if we are able to reach students now and inspire their hard work and achievement,” said Berman.
