Go Tell Michelle: African-American Women Write to the New First Lady is one of the 2009 Letitia Woods Brown Memorial Book Award winners in the category of edited volume. The book features a poem written by Dr. Arlette Miller Smith, Associate Professor of English. The poem, titled "We in Anticipation of You," was chosen to be the first to appear in the compilation of works written for Michelle Obama.

On Thursday, October 22, the Wegmans School of Pharmacy administered the Deaf Strong Hospital program for its students. The program, which is the only one of its kind in the country, is a role-reversal exercise that involves students consulting "health providers" who are actually members of the local deaf community. The goal of the program is to teach students patience and empathy, characteristics which will serve them well in their future careers as pharmacists.

The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team competed in the 2009 MVP Health Care Rochester Marathon on September 13. Together, they raised $1,150 to benefit the Arthritis Foundation. The team participates in the marathon every year.

St. John Fisher College, West Irondequoit Schools, and Webster Schools are partnering to develop a new post-secondary program. The foundation of the partnership is a shared mission of preparing students for lifelong learning and to become productive community members. The central goal of the program, which takes the form of a satellite high school classroom on the Fisher campus, is for students to develop greater independence, as well as vocational and educational skills.

On Thursday, October 22, the Sport Studies Department will welcome Mike Behan, Director of Business Development for the Cleveland Cavaliers, to speak on campus. Behan is the latest professional to participate in the Sport Studies Speaker Series, which brings successful and active members of the sport industry to Fisher to speak with students, faculty, and staff. The event takes place during free period in Basil 135.

The award-winning documentary
Pray the Devil Back to Hell will be shown on October 22 at St. John Fisher College. The 72-minute film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring three members of the Fisher faculty: Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology and African American Studies Ruth Harris; Assistant Professor of Modern Languages and Cultures Marc Papé; and Assistant Professor of Political Science Zachary Shirkey. The event is sponsored by the Religious Studies Department at St. John Fisher College. It begins at 7 p.m. in Basil 135, and is free and open to the public.
