Each year, members of the Fisher faculty have special projects in mind. And each year, they are invited to apply for faculty development grants that could help them with their project or mission. Grant funds are intended to promote faculty development that results in scholarly research and dissemination of that research.

On Wednesday, December 15, students from Communication/Journalism 260: Digital Media and Online Communities presented their final video projects to a campus-wide audience. The project encouraged students to practice digital storytelling using original and/or preexisting video footage.

St. John Fisher College alumnus Augustin “Augie” Melendez has been promoted to Chief Diversity Officer and Director of Community Affairs at Kodak. He is a 1999 graduate of Fisher’s MS in Organizational Learning and Human Resource Development Program, and participates as a member of the program’s advisory board. Prior to this position, he held the VP of Human Resources position for Kodak’s Worldwide Regional Operation. In addition, he worked as the HR director at Paychex, Inc. and at the Rochester City School District.

Community service is an integral part of life at St. John Fisher College. Service-learning and community service initiatives at Fisher have gained a lot of momentum during the last couple of years, and 2010 was no exception. Not only did students embrace service-learning classes offered, but they were passionate about the work they were doing and the organizations in the community they worked with. Here is a look back at this year’s successes, and a preview of efforts to come.

Two students from St. John Fisher College’s Wegmans School of Pharmacy recently placed in the top 10 of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) 15th National Clinical Skills Competition, which took place on December 5 at the ASHP’s 45th Midyear Clinical Meeting. Caitlin White (´11) and Tuong Diep (´11) competed against 108 teams from pharmacy schools around the country, a record number of competition participants.

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures has announced a brand new study abroad program for the summer of 2011. Fisher in Spain is a faculty-led program, provided by Seville’s Geranios Language School, a Spanish private institution that has been organizing language immersion programs for almost 30 years.

St. John Fisher College has welcomed three new members to its Board of Trustees. They include: Diana Nole, President, Digital Medical Solutions (DMS) for Carestream Health, Inc.; Paul Hewitt (´85), Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Georgia Institute of Technology; and Ferdinand Jay Smith, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Creative Director, Jay Advertising. They were elected at the College’s December board meeting.

Two St. John Fisher College alumni recently received the Rochester Business Journal’s “Forty Under 40” Award. The award recognizes professionals younger than 40 years of age for service in their jobs and in the community. They were Andrew Claus, a 2007 graduate of the MBA program, and Renee Tschetter, a 1994 graduate of the accounting program.

Sustained Dialogue, a student organization at St. John Fisher College, is an organization that helps students make time to understand the different perspectives of their peers. The philosophy of the group is that engaging in conversations with those who may be different from you enables you to interact comfortably with all kinds of people, and helps build relationships across community divides.
