Student Organizations Campus Resources
St. John Fisher College is proud of its nearly 40 student organizations! Students will find many opportunities to pursue their interests, and new organizations form as students have the desire to create them. Membership and participation in all student organizations are open to everyone.
Following is a description of the student organizations at Fisher. The list is subject to change as the status of student organizations fluctuates.
Student Government Association
The purpose of the St. John Fisher College Student Government Association is to represent students in all aspects of college life. It shall provide programs that will satisfy the aspirations of the students and promote better communication between the students, faculty, staff and administration of the College. It shall recognize and register student organizations in an opportunity filled environment. It shall appropriate and administer the student activities fee as recommended by the Finance Committee. The Student Government Association shall do the utmost to provide for the best interests of the students, thus empowering themselves as well as the entire student body.
Graduate Student Association
The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is the student organization created to serve as an advocate for graduate students both to the Student Government Association and the Graduate Program Council. The Graduate Program Council, an academic policy committee, meets regularly to review new programs, program changes, and graduate student policy and procedure. In addition, GSA provides many opportunities for social interactions through scheduled activities each semester.
Academic Organizations
Academic organizations are offered to meet the needs of students interested in a particular area of study. Several of the organizations are comprised of students who are studying that particular discipline, but all are open to any interested students. These organizations often offer invaluable insights and practical experience in a particular academic area.
Accounting Club
The Accounting Club focuses on a variety of activities in which students interact with professionals in accounting. Various community service activities are also a part of the club's scheduled events.
Biology Club
The Biology Club exists to provide students with important information about careers in science and to establish social interactions among students and faculty in this field of study.
Chemistry Club
The main objective of the Chemistry Club is to bring together interested undergraduates for chemistry-related programs, including speakers, films, and tours. Some club members also participate in a tutoring service for general and organic chemistry students.
History Club
The History Club is available for students interested in all aspects of history. The club meets regularly and takes various trips.
Management Club
The students who participate in the Management Club come together through meetings, speakers, and social events.
Political Science Club
The purpose of the Political Science Club is to enable its members to participate in formal and informal meetings and discussions on current issues, career orientation, graduate opportunities, and related topics. In addition, the club periodically publishes the political science journal Etiam.
Pre-Law Association
The goal of the Pre-Law Association is to give students a closer look into a career in law. The Association organizes mock trials and workshops at which law alumni help students become familiar with the LSAT and with law school applications and admissions procedures.
Psychology Club
The main goal of the Psychology Club is to bring interested undergraduates together for psychology-related programs, lectures, discussions, and trips. It provides valuable information for students interested in a career in psychology.
Young Republicans
Young Republicans is a club that strives to expand the knowledge of politics among its members and to involve the entire Fisher community in the political process.
Service Organizations
Colleges Against Cancer
CAC strives to involve the Fisher community in the fight against cancer and in supporting programs of the American Cancer Society, including the Relay for Life.
Commuter Council
The Commuter Council of St. John Fisher College is a socially-oriented organization that is designed to meet the needs of commuting students. The Council strongly encourages student participation and input on activities such as social events, school policies, and related matters.
Resident Student Association
Resident Student Association (RSA) is an organization comprised of students who reside in the residence halls of St. John Fisher College. The Association is committed to promoting diversity, enriching the College residence hall experience, and creating an overall positive campus community through social and educational programs and events. The Association General Council meets weekly and all resident students are welcome to attend. Some of the programs that the Resident Student Association sponsors are: Winter Olympix, Siblings Weekend, the Midnight Pajama Fun Run, and the Tip-Off Classic.
Students With a Vision (SWAV)
SWAV is an organization of dedicated students which promotes and provides community service on both the St. John Fisher College campus, as well as communities within the Rochester area. Through weekly service activities SWAV hopes to instill the importance of community and integrity within all participants. With initiatives in education, healthcare, elderly care, hunger and homelessness SWAV hopes to make a difference by establishing volunteer opportunities for students.
Student Activities Board
The Student Activities Board (SAB) is an organization responsible for major campus programs and social activities. The SAB sponsors a wide range of activities, including films, lectures, cultural programs, social events, trips, and major weekend activities. The SAB is committed to providing Fisher with the finest and most diverse cultural and social programs possible.
Special Interest Organizations
Special interest organizations exist to address specific student interests. All Fisher students who believe they can help contribute to the goal of these organizations are encouraged to become members and/or strong supporters of these clubs.
Black Student Union
The purpose of this organization is to provide a forum for students to learn about issues influencing the Black experience, and to explore Black culture and heritage. Activities include workshops, lectures, and cultural celebrations. Membership is open to all Fisher students.
Fisher Christian Fellowship
This group is open to all campus members who are interested in providing opportunities for spiritual growth and in building our campus community.
Circle K
The Circle K Club, an affiliate of Circle K International and Kiwanis International, is sponsored by the Rochester Downtown Kiwanis Club. The primary purposes of Circle K are to serve both the community and the College through responsible student action, to help make a difference through direct personal service, and to assist in fund-raising for charitable organizations.
Drama Club - "Fisher Players"
Fisher Players is open to all students, as well as to faculty and staff, who have an interest in putting on plays, being actors on stageand/or serving as technical crew behind the scenes. The Players present a production each semester, including a spring musical.
Fisher Pride
Fisher Pride Union, along with other diversity groups on campus, recognize the importance of involving the entire St. John Fisher community in the effort to foster a campus environment in which all students are made to feel safe and respected for who they are.
Gospel Choir
The Gospel Choir is dedicated to making a joyful noise unto the Lord, and to having a good time while doing it. Music performedby the choir is in the African-American tradition. Rehearsals are held once a week and performances are scheduled throughout the school year.
Latino Student Union
The foundation of the Latino Student Union is the Spanish culture. The goal of the organization is to make the campus knowledgeable about the Spanish culture in the most positive way through cultural celebrations, workshops, and speakers.
Teddi- Dance for Love
Each February, this organization sponsors a 24-hour dance marathon as a fundraiser for Camp Good Days and Special Times. Students are encouraged to sign up as dancers or volunteers. This activity is entering its 19th year at Fisher.
Media/Publications Organizations
Media/publications organizations are offered to provide practical opportunities for students interested in communication information by way of a particular medium.
The Angle
A literary magazine which contains contributions by students and faculty.
The Cardinal Courier
The campus newspaper created by and for students. The eyes and ears of the student body.
JoRoffs
The student yearbook tries to capture both the everyday and the unique moments in student life at the College. Its title represents the signature of St. John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester, England, and Chancellor of Cambridge University in the 16th century, who signed his name in the Latin "JoRoffs" (Joannes for John, Roffensis for Rochester). Membership on the JoRoffs staff is open to all students, particularly those interested in photography, writing, and layout design.
Radio Station WFSH
WFSH is open to all students who have an interest in radio broadcasting. The station gives students an opportunity to put such interest into practical use, providing broadcast experience as well as experience in production, programming, operation, and management of a radio station.
Club Sports
Club sports are special interest clubs offered to meet the recreational needs of students. The following clubs exist and meet throughout the year: Men's and Women's Rugby Clubs, Hockey Club, Cheerleading Club, and the Karate Club.
Fisher Ski Association
All season and winter fun. The Fisher Ski Association knows where all the action is during the year. All are encouraged to join, even if those who do not know how to ski or snowboard. Tubers are also welcome.
Honor Societies
Honor Societies are national and international organizations which recognize achievement in a particular area of study. Students are selected for membership and must meet specific criteria to be considered.
Alpha Mu Gamma, Eta Chi Chapter
This is the national collegiate foreign language honor society. The aims of Alpha Mu Gamma are to recognize achievement in the field of foreign language study; to encourage an interest in the study of foreign languages, literatures, and civilizations; to stimulate a desire for linguistic attainment; and to foster sympathetic understanding of other peoples. Membership is open to outstanding students who are enrolled in or have completed the third or any higher semester of college study of any foreign language, modern or classic.
Alpha Sigma Lambda, Delta Mu Chapter
Alpha Sigma Lambda is a national honor society for adult undergraduate students. Each spring, students who meet the following criteria are eligible for membership in the Delta Mu Chapter at St. John Fisher College: students must be 25 or older; must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours at Fisher, with at least 15 hours in liberal arts/science outside the major; and have achieved a 3.5 grade-point average.
Delta Epsilon Sigma, Gamma Tau Chapter
A national scholastic honor society at colleges and universities with a Catholic tradition, this organization is open to students and faculty in all academic disciplines. Its principal objective is to recognize academic excellence.
Omicron Delta Epsilon
The Alpha-Omicron Chapter of this international honor society in economics was established at St. John Fisher College in 1976. Its objectives are to recognize outstanding academic achievements in economics and to establish closer ties between students and Economics Department faculty.
Phi Alpha Theta
A professional, international honor society formed to bring students, teachers, and writers of history together both intellectually and socially, it encourages and assists historical research and publication by its members.
Pi Delta Phi, Eta Nu Chapter
A French honor society for men and women, the Eta Nu chapter at St. John Fisher College seeks to recognize outstanding scholarship in French language and literature; to increase the knowledge and admiration in American students of France's contributions to world culture; and to stimulate and encourage such cultural activities that will lead to a deeper appreciation of France and its people.
Sigma Theta Tau, Delta Sigma Chapter
This international honor society of nursing recognizes the achievement of academic scholarship of superior quality. Because achievement of superior scholarship demonstrates leadership, creativity, and overall ability in nursing, membership at this level is based upon the student's grade-point average.
