Study Management Gain a Competitive Edge at FisherIn today's increasingly competitive global environment, employers are finding themselves searching for creative and skilled employees to help lead their businesses through the coming challenges. The management major at St. John Fisher College provides our students with an outstanding educational program which gives them just that competitive edge. Based on the right blend of liberal arts and professional education, our undergraduate program produces graduates who have lifelong learning skills, the ability to lead others, critical thinking skills, team-building skills, and a commitment to ethical decision-making. “The liberal arts approach Fisher has to business prepares the whole person for leadership in our economy.” Germaine Knapp, President, WORDSmart Students pursuing the bachelor of science degree in management may pursue any one of the following managerial concentration areas:
A Holistic, Balanced Approach to CurriculumEach of our courses is designed with an eye to educating the “whole student.” The curriculum receives continual scrutiny of faculty. Students completing their bachelor’s degrees will have an opportunity to continue toward earning an MBA degree at Fisher in a shorter time frame. The undergraduate program is designed to provide a well-balanced education; it emphasizes practice as well as theory, implementation as well as diagnosis and decision. Fisher's management faculty focus on educating tomorrow's managers with the belief that management is not just a set of quantitative and functional skills, but a profoundly human activity. Such an approach gives our students the ability to understand and integrate the whole enterprise, rather than merely portions of it. Full-time faculty teach a majority of our courses. Class sizes are limited to 30-35 students. We pride ourselves on being accessible to our students throughout the week, and encourage them to take advantage of this opportunity whenever they need extra help and/or guidance. Internship OpportunitiesTo promote student involvement in actual work situations, we also make internship opportunities available to qualified undergraduate students. Under the right circumstances, one may be able to have these experiences count as the equivalent of up to two management courses. A former G.M. executive, Dr. Donald Borbee, exemplifies the quality of adjunct faculty working at Fisher and is currently overseeing this program. Having worked in the corporate sector for 41 years, starting as Office Boy and rising to Quality Control Engineer, Dr. Borbee brings valuable corporate insight to the internship experience. Positive student feedback on internships supports our own assessment that this work experience is enriching. Employers agree. For example, the Director of Recruiting at Northwestern Mutual has said, “Fisher students have the entrepreneurial spirit and strong work ethic that Northwestern Mutual looks for in interns.” Some of our Fisher management students currently hold internships at:
Career SuccessUpon graduation, management majors enjoy an excellent job placement record. Employers of our recent graduates include, among others:
Placement survey feedback indicates that the mid-range of starting salaries for our graduates is $20,000-$30,000. At the high end, it is not uncommon to see figures above $40,000. Highly Trained and Educated Faculty Our faculty are committed to teaching as their first priority and are highly qualified in their fields. Most hold Ph.D's and are tenured; they have earned the right to become permanent members of the College's faculty after rigorous assessment by their colleagues. Besides teaching, all members of the departmental faculty are also involved in many scholarly activities; they conduct research and publish in respected peer-reviewed journals. Some are involved in consulting activities, and most have extensive experience in the "real world" of business. Diverse backgrounds of faculty members further enrich both their teaching and the learning experiences of their students. This diversity is reflected in the faculty's personal and academic backgrounds (ranging from economics to engineering, with many holding multiple advanced degrees or professional qualifications) and their heritages, making ours a truly multinational department. In today's global economy with diverse organizational work forces, this type of exposure helps to give our students an added edge. |
