At an early evening reception on November 17, St. John Fisher College awarded its eighth annual Justinian Medal to Richard A. Calabrese '57. In addition, the College issued a special citation and posthumous recognition of Norman A. Palmiere, Sr., Esq. '57, who was a college classmate and close personal friend of Calabrese.

The Small Business Council of Rochester, an affiliate of the Rochester Business Alliance, has named Thomas Bonadio '71 as its 2009 Business Person of the Year. Bonadio, who was chosen from a pool of seven finalists, received the award at the Small Business Council Gala Luncheon on October 14.

On October 29, the St. John Fisher College Buffalo/Niagara Alumni Chapter named Dan Maxwell '66 and Sam Rizzo '01 as the 2009 recipients of the SJFC Outstanding Alumni of the Year in Western New York Award. Recipients of the award are honored for their professional achievements and for incorporating goodness, discipline, and knowledge into their everyday lives.

Rochester Business Journal has chosen five St. John Fisher College alumni and one faculty member as recipients of its 15th Annual "Forty Under 40" Awards. The awards recognize professionals younger than 40 years of age for service in their jobs and in the community.

On Friday, November 6, Dr. Mark Rice, Associate Professor of American Studies, and Jeremy Sarachan, Assistant Professor of Communication/Journalism, presented "Facebook, Twitter, and iPhones: How Social Networking and Mobile Technologies Improve Learning and Prepare Students for Careers in the 21st Century." The presentation was part of St. John Fisher College's First Friday Faculty Lecture Series.

The Rochester City School District (RCSD) Board of Education and the Superintendent of Schools have selected Dr. Richard DeJesús-Rueff, Vice President for Student Affairs and Diversity Initiatives at St. John Fisher College, and Nathalia Martinez '09 as award recipients. DeJesús-Rueff received the Volunteer Education Award, while Martinez was presented with the Community Service Award. Both were honored at the RCSD's Hispanic Heritage Celebration on October 22.

On Saturday, September 19, more than 50 First Generation Scholars, Service Scholars, and their families and friends attended a get-together prior to the homecoming football game. At the event, all of the scholars introduced themselves, stated their hometowns and occupations, and told of their continued commitment to community service.

At its first ever Lifetime Achievement Awards Luncheon, the Accounting Alumni Society at St. John Fisher College honored Andrew Vergo ‘55 and Kenneth Mangan ‘56. As recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award, Vergo and Mangan were recognized for their distinguished careers in the accounting field, and for their commitment to and unwavering support of St. John Fisher College.

Three Fisher faculty members presented "Putting Rochester on the Map: George Goler, M.D., and Health Care for All" on Friday, October 2, as part of the College's First Friday Faculty Lecture Series. The presenting professors were: Dr. Carolyn Vacca, Assistant Professor of History; Dr. Lisa Jadwin, Professor of English; and Dr. Timothy Madigan, Assistant Professor of Philosophy.
