Alum Receives National Certification

Theresa Alampi-Cortez ’03 recently achieved National Board Certification, a voluntary assessment program designed to develop, recognize, and retain accomplished teachers.

Cortez is a 9th grade English and journalism teacher at Corinth-Holders High School, in Wendell, North Carolina. After Fisher, she went on to receive her master’s degree in education from North Carolina State University.

Board certification is achieved through a performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years. There are five core propositions, created by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, which are referred to when certifying teachers. They include:

  • Teachers who are committed to students and to their learning
  • Teachers who know the subjects they teach, and know how to teach them to their students
  • Teachers who are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning
  • Teachers who think systematically about their practice and learn from experience
  • Teachers who are members of their learning communities
