Service-Learning Course Shapes Up East High School Courtyard
04/14/2011
On Saturday, April 9, ten students from Dr. Jim Wood's American Cultural Institutions service-learning course gathered at East High School to tackle the landscaping of the school's courtyard.
The project began in the fall 2010 section of the course with a group of five students, so Saturday's project was a continuation of that work. In addition, both sections' students have tutored for 15 hours in the Teaching and Learning Institute and AVID program at East as part of their support work.
Students were also tasked with securing donated financial resources in order to purchase the plants. But, the majority of the costs were offset by the Community-Based Service-Learning Mini Grant that was awarded to a small group of students in the fall.
"This project reflects what the course is about by giving back to the community and improving the community through education," said Dr. Lynn Donahue, service-learning coordinator.
