Local High School Students Enjoy a Week of Discovery at Fisher

Dozens of students from the East Rochester School District and the Rochester City School District’s “Horizons” summer camp program recently spent a week on the St. John Fisher College campus for “Discover at Fisher” week, learning about a variety of career options and more. The weeklong program took place July 21-25.

“Discover at Fisher” week was hosted by Meg Bain, wife of President Bain. While this was the first time the program was spread out over a week, it was the seventh year that Mrs. Bain hosted a discovery event on campus. This year’s program was made possible thanks to funding provided by the Glover-Crask Charitable Trust.

Students traveled to each of the College’s five schools throughout the week to participate in daily sessions that were led by Fisher faculty, Bills staff, and members of the Rochester community.

The students kicked off the week with a day in the Wegmans School of Pharmacy. While there, they worked with pharmacy faculty to learn more about careers in pharmacy and participated in a hands-on activity in the School’s compounding lab. At the end of the day, they were treated as VIPS at the Buffalo Bills’ Community Relations tent, where they took in the afternoon practice and enjoyed a meet and greet with several of the players.

Joel Kraft, Executive Chef for Lackmann Culinary Services, led a session on healthy eating, while local fitness expert, Wanda Miller, worked with the students on creating healthy habits. Students also had an opportunity to work in the School’s state-of-the-art Simulation Center where they learned CPR and how to take blood pressure, and worked with the interactive simulation robots, putting them in a real-life emergency room scenario. Andy Major, Buffalo Bills’ Vice President, Event Operations and Guest Experience, presented “Discover Careers in Sports: Chalk Talk,” where he talked about all of the career opportunities that exist with sports teams – for both minor and major leagues.

Wednesday’s session brought the students to the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education where they participated in sessions about college readiness, what role math plays in a football game, and a literacy journey. All sessions were led by education faculty. In addition, Yantee Slobert, Director of Fisher’s Office of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity Programs and a first generation college student, shared his story with the students and gave an overview of the diversity programs offered at the College. Students also heard from Sally Vaughan, Director of the Community Service at the College.

President Bain welcomed the students to Thursday’s session which took place in the Victor E. Salerno Center for American Enterprise. “Discover Business: Financial literacy, managing money, and investments” was led by faculty in the School of Business and students learned about making good credit choices, keeping a balanced budget, and other money tips.

Students also participated in a calisthenics session lead by some of Fisher’s football players and head coach, Paul Vosburgh. Orientation leaders and members of the Office of Campus Life also worked with students on team-building activities.

On the final day of the week-long program, students spent the day in the School of Arts and Sciences discovering science and technology. Faculty introduced students to the science labs where they learned about nanochemistry and held worm races. They also has an opportunity to work in the Media and Communication Department’s TV studio.
