On Tuesday, July 31, St. John Fisher College and the Buffalo Bills hosted “Discover at Fisher” day for 30 local high school students from the East Rochester School District and the Safe to be Smart Program of the Rochester Public Library, which provides programming opportunities for children and adolescents at six branches of the library. Thanks to a Title I grant from the federal government, administrators and teachers from the Nathaniel Rochester Community School No. 3, along with Dr. Kathy Broikou, Director of the Literacy Education Program at Fisher, created a summer literacy clinic for students from School No. 3. Heading up the NRCS-SJFC Partners in Literacy Program is Allison Rioux, a teacher at School No. 3, as well as a part-time faculty member at Fisher. The Wegmans School of Pharmacy and Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education are collaborating to offer a Pharmacy Teaching Certificate Program. Dr. Jeff Liles of the School of Education, along with Drs. Asim Abu-Baker, Lisa Avery, and Kate Juba of the School of Pharmacy have teamed up to develop a program designed to train pharmacists as educators using a “theory to practice” approach, where pharmacists are submerged in learning theory while learning to apply it to clinical practice. The Brockport Central School District has a new superintendent. Dr. Lesli Myers was recently chosen as Brockport’s next superintendent, replacing Superintendent Garry Stone, who is retiring at the end of the month. During May and June, the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education is hosting students and teachers from a local all-boys charter school. Over sixty ninth grade boys from the University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men (UPREP) are studying at Fisher to prepare for their New York State Regents exams.
