Ricca Presents at American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting

Dr. Bernard Ricca, Director of the Graduate Program in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education, presented a paper at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). The meeting took place April 13-17 in Vancouver, Canada.

His paper was entitled “The Complexities of Complexity.” It discussed how complexity theories, which largely come from the natural sciences and mathematics, have been used as lenses to look at education for approximately 20 years. Ricca analyzed how well the philosophies associated with complexity theory match the philosophies associated with education. In addition to his presentation, he also participated in a discussion panel on the film, “An Ecology of Mind.”

Ricca also officially began his term as the Chair of the Science Teaching and Learning Special Interest Group of AERA.

The AERA, a national research society, strives to advance knowledge about education, to encourage scholarly inquiry related to education, and to promote the use of research to improve education and serve the public good.
