School of Education Holds Graduate Awards Ceremony

On Tuesday, May 3, the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education held its Graduate Awards Ceremony, recognizing ten graduate students for their work.

The Excellence in Preparation to Teach English Award was presented by Dr. Russ Coward to Nicholas Fargnoli, for his outstanding coursework, capstone project, and student teaching in English.

Dr. Coward also presented the Excellence in Preparation to Teach Social Studies Award to Kyle Rumley, for his outstanding coursework, capstone project, and student teaching in Social Studies.

Drs. Diane Reed and William Stroud presented Brian Siesto with the Distinguished Leadership Award, given to a student who has distinguished him/herself through significant contributions to class discussions and group projects, and who exemplifies the attributes and values of effective leadership.

The pair also presented the Dr. Ronald Edmonds Award, given to a student who has demonstrated significant progress in meeting the goals and standards of the Master of Science in Educational Leadership Program, and who exemplifies the characteristics of leaders in effective schools. The recipient was Christina Schermerhorn.

There were two recipients of the Outstanding Childhood Education Student Teacher Award, given to students who demonstrated that they will lead a distinguished career and be leaders in a diverse, rapidly changing, and increasingly technological society. They also have utilized their knowledge, skills, and dispositions to have a great impact on student learning during student teaching. Dr. Jim Wood presented this award to Jonathan Myler and Megan Bunce.

Drs. Joellen Maples and Chinwe Ikpeze presented the Leadership in Literacy Award to Benjamin Stopka. The award is given to a student who engages in a way of thinking that creates meaningful and enduring change.

They also presented the Teacher as Researcher Award, which is given to a student who conducted an exceptional action research project that addressed a significant issue in literacy. The recipient was Lisa Ventress.

The final award, Excellence in Capstone Research Award, is presented to a student who has written a high-quality literature review, developed a creative and/or innovative action research project, and completed action research that will help expand the field of special education. This year, Drs. Susan Schultz and David Rostetter presented the award to two students, Heather Kemper and Maria Tobin.
