Ropes Course Teaches Education Students Value of Rapport

Earlier this semester, Dr. Joellen Maples and Dr. Linda Schlosser from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education, took a group of adolescent education students on an annual ropes course trip to Sunshine Rotary Campus.  

The students were from one of Maples’ literacy classes, where they learn about the importance of building a classroom community. The purpose of the ropes course is to help build community among the students, and to demonstrate and model a community-building activity for their future classrooms.

After assessing the activity, students describe common characteristics of a learning community, but they are also able to apply those concepts in their professional relationships with other teachers and their future students. They are able to consider the concept of community, both through theory and practice. The exercise also allows the students to reflect on their leadership abilities that will affect their future teaching practices.

“Students enjoy the opportunity to get outside of the classroom and learn about the importance of teacher-student rapport and team-building,” said Maples.

Each year, the ropes course outing is supported by the Literacy Department and the Inclusive Education Department.
