Content Area Major Requirements

Please refer to each department's requirements for majors.

College Core Requirements

The College Core curriculum consisting of 15 courses establishes the centrality of the liberal arts in the academic experience by creating a common foundation of intellectual and practical skills. Many of the requirements in the Core may be met by courses the student completes in the Adolescence and Content majors.

Adolescence Education candidates must complete two courses in a language other than English. The two-course sequence must be in the same language for a minimum of six credits. Two courses in American Sign Language meet this requirement. However, students pursuing a B.A. degree must complete a two-course sequence in a foreign language for the College Core. American Sign Language does NOT meet this requirement.

Qualifications for New York State Teacher Certification Grades 7-12 and An Extension in Grades 5-6

Candidates in Adolescence Education (grades 7-12) and the Middle School Extension ( grades 5-6) must successfully complete the following:

  • Bachelor's degree which includes at least 30 credits in the liberal arts major (teaching content field).
  • Education Core-43 credits in teacher preparation courses as listed above in the Adolescence major.
  • At least 100 hours of field experiences prior to student teaching.
  • Student teaching experience-14 weeks.
  • New York State Teacher Certification Examinations: Liberal Arts and Science Test (LAST), Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (ATS-W), and a Content Specialty Test (CST) for each area of certification.
  • Fingerprint clearance.
  • Child Abuse and School Violence Intervention and Prevention Workshops.

Upon completing the program of study and passing the required New York State Teacher Certification exams, candidates will qualify for the Initial Teaching Certificate. The initial certificate expires after five years, at which time candidates must meet the requirements for the Professional Certificate. Teacher candidates who are interested in pursuing the Special Education certification, grades 7-12, must also complete the Special Education major. (See Special Education Major, Grades 7-12 Requirements.)
