Department of Undergraduate Inclusive Education (DUIE) Mission Statement
The mission of the Department of Undergraduate Inclusive Education is to provide candidates with educational programs and experiences designed to help them develop the necessary skills, knowledge, and professional dispositions needed for teaching in educational settings that are inclusive of all children.
Program Overview
The Adolescence Education Degree Program is comprised of the Inclusive Education major and the content area major. It is designed to prepare candidates to teach in one of the teaching disciplines at the middle and adolescence levels (grades 5-6 and 7-12): Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Social Studies, English, French, and Spanish.
Candidates also complete a major in a content specialty area. The major is designed to meet college, New York State, and national standards in the content specialty areas. In certain majors, additional courses may be required. For certification in Adolescence Education and the Middle School Extension, candidates are also required to successfully complete a set of courses, field experiences, and student teaching.
The Inclusive Education major requires 31 credits. The (required) Students with Disabilities Generalist Concentration has an additional 25 credits. The program leads to dual certification (content area 7-12, SWD generalist 7-12) as well as a middle school extension.
