Beta Gamma Sigma Liaison Embraces New Role, Kicks off with Day of Service

All Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) National Honor Society members are required to participate in a planned day of service. The St. John Fisher College chapter decided to serve at School No. 19 in Rochester to promote and encourage reading.

The BGS members, as well as Dr. Jason Berman, Professor of Management/Marketing, dressed up in different costumes to ignite the Halloween spirit.  After reading to the kids in kindergarten through second grade, the books were donated to the school.  This was the first volunteer activity of the year completed by the BGS chapter, and the members say they are looking forward to completing more throughout the year.

Amanda Scheutzow, a senior majoring in marketing, has recently taken on the position of BGS National Honor Society Liaison for Fisher, and has already embraced the role and the responsibilities that come with it. The day of service reading event was the first of many to come under her tenure.

Scheutzow first gained interest in becoming the liaison because she did not really know much about the chapter prior to being inducted.  She grew more interested in the program when she realized how few students actually knew about BGS, or knew that there was an active chapter on campus.

She was in London during the official “tapping,” which is the ceremony when students are invited to join their respective chapter. Dr. David Martin, Dean of the School of Business, and Berman traveled to classrooms in session and announced the nominees by tapping them on their shoulder.  The open liaison position was accepting applications and Scheutzow was intrigued and applied.  She wanted to learn more about the chapter and become even more involved on campus before she graduates in May.

Since the work and preparation for all of the BGS events has just begun, Scheutzow’s focus has been to work with Berman on special events and meetings.

“Dr. Berman is a great leader and someone whom I really look up to, so being able to collaborate with him is a pleasure,” she said.

Although Scheutzow has just started as BGS liaison, she does not plan on wasting any time.  She hopes to make the most out of this experience and wants to make sure the members of the chapter benefit as well.

“I want to talk to the members and see what they want out of the business program before they graduate,” she said.

Regarding any future plans to enhance the chapter at Fisher, Scheutzow has several improvements she’d like to make.  She wants all students to know more about BGS, and that, even though it is a small chapter consisting of 10-12 members, there is an honor associated with it.

“Students miss the importance of being accepted into the chapter and I want the members to feel proud,” she said.

In addition to this new role, Scheutzow has been involved with various activities on campus including the student ambassador team, lacrosse, intramural volleyball, orientation team, Emerging Leaders, and the Student Government Association. She has also held an internship at Xerox for four years.

When asked how all of these previous activities helped prepare her for this new position, Scheutzow feels that any leadership role prepares students for real life.

“Get involved and prepare yourself in any way that you can - practice makes perfect.  I was always the one person who was a leader whether it was group projects or sports. I love being involved and helping others,” said Scheutzow.  “If you want to be a leader, you really can’t fail. Mistakes can be made, but you never truly fail.”

This November, Scheutzow will be attending the Student Leadership Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, to gain networking knowledge and enhance her leadership skills.
