School of Business Announces New Human Resources Management Major

St. John Fisher College's School of Business has added another new major to be offered this fall. The management department will now offer a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Human Resources Management (HRM), which has, until now, only been offered as a concentration.
The program is designed to prepare students for the HRM positions, providing them with an understanding of HR processes and development. Job-relevant skills in team-building, leadership, conflict management, and group facilitation will be an integral part of the curriculum. Upon graduation, students will be well-versed in various HR roles, including recruitment, training, development, and compensation and benefits enabling firms in a variety of industries and environments to maximize their employees.
According to Dr. David G. Martin, Dean, School of Business, the HRM concentration had experienced rapid growth, with increased enrollment and student interest.
"We saw the attraction in this program and the students' commitment to engage more in the field. With our faculty expertise in this area, it was a good fit to add the major as a program option," said Martin.
He added that the School is committed to aligning its student organizations to professional chapters so students can easily transition from collegiate affiliations to professional memberships within their field. In 2010, students in the School of Business mobilized to establish a Fisher Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) chapter, which was officially inducted by SHRM in February of this year.
The College has added the HRM major at a time when the profession appears to be growing as well. The most recent edition of the "United States Department of Labor - Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook" projects that overall employment growth for all human resources, training, and labor relations managers and specialist occupations will be much faster than the average employment growth. Additionally, it cites that college graduates and those who have earned certification should have the best job opportunities, particularly graduates with a bachelor's degree in human resources, human resources administration, or industrial and labor relations. Overall, HR employment is projected to grow by 22 percent between 2008 and 2018.
The School of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB), an accreditation that represents a rigorous peer review of a school's practices against globally set standards.
